Having Trouble Getting a Second Card to Fold

Thread Starter
So, I started back up with folding yesterday using my 860 and my new GTX670 (biggrin.gif). That went awesome for a day, and then I decided, well, why not pop my old graphics card (a 9800gtx+) in the second slot and go for the max. Unfortunately, that hasn't been going so well. I can't seem to get the 670 to do anything at all. It had switched to "Failed" by the time I got home from work, and the 9800 hadn't done anything either. Right now I'm showing 0% usage on the 670 and 85% usage on the 9800. Any ideas on how to get both of these guys going?

Try manually setting the GPU and cuda IDs yourself. I'm assuming v7 and they are just set to -1 as default.

Yeah, that was on V7. I just tried taking out the 9800, and the 670 picked right back up. I'll put it back in and give this a try.

I was also experiencing some instability with my processor, so I'm thinking that it may have been a power issue. Is there any chance that an overworked power supply could cause this sort of issue?

Hmmm thats a possibility. Do you happen to have a killawatt or something to measure the power draw from the wall.

Unfortunately no. I plugged in some pretty ambitious numbers into a power supply calculator, and it looks like its a possibility that I'm getting close to the limit.

However, I just tried your other advice, and it looks like it's working. At least both GPUs have a work unit in progress now. I'm getting some weird numbers now though. The WU for the 9800 is showing its credit as "Unknown". Is that normal, or is a corrupted WU, or what?

Any chance? Sure, but I would say that's very unlikely to be the case. The symptoms that you're experiencing are not uncommon for trying to get two vastly different architectures folding in the same machine using v7. Last I checked you couldn't fold a Fermi and pre-Fermi (like a GTX 260) in the same machine using v7, so I wouldn't be surprised if that is what you're experiencing with your cards. The workaround for this last I checked was to run one of the cards on a older v6 client, so for example for you I would recommend trying the 9800GTX on v6 (the GPU2 one unless I'm mistaken) with the 670 and CPU on v7. Good luck.

What is the WU #? Could post the log file as well.

It's folding a 5765 right now. Apparently it's a ~300 point WU. Seems like they're going pretty quick though, even if it's not much. No errors in the log or anything, but it's weird that the numbers aren't showing up. Maybe it's just a quirk of using Fermi/pre-Fermi together like that guy mentioned above.

Yeah 353 points. My 8800GT did quite a few of those a day for around 5k PPD.

Yeah, not too bad. I actually am planning on eventually moving to using my 670 and 470 together, but I don't have a 4th power cable right now. Hopefully that'll be a bit more efficient.
