I would not flash the bios if I was you.

I did go a few forums at the time, they gave me the thumbs up XD. Since some of them had done it with their XFX HD 7970, but I don't think they knew about the revision then :S. unlucky me biggrin.gif

That's the thing about internet advice. It's worthless when it's wrong and you're stuck with holding the bag. This si why when it comes to watercooling, do visual matches or else...

Sounds like a schoolboy error to me. You should have checked if you could rma it after messing about with it. But then again you also should have checked your water-block would have even fit the thing, then decided against borking it on and probably breaking something. I mean who goes and spends that kind of money without knowing what there doing?.......

Get the normal cooler back on and try to rma it.

I flashed the Ghz BIOS to an HIS reference card and it works great. I get a 1050 default clock at 1.25 V and will run at 1150 / 1700 just using CCC
With Trixx overvolting up to 1.35V it will do 1300 benchmarks and is game stable at 1250 / 1700
I'm pretty sure if you try to flash a card that is not reference it just won't let you proceed ... but that is just by using the downloadable flasher. Overall I'm really happy that for the price of the cheapest 7970 I could find I got such an improvable card.

@tsm106 is right ... lots of 7970's are now revised. I believe they mainly do it reduce the manufacturing cost of each card as the prices fall.
The Gigabyte 7970 WF3 non Ghz edition has been revised to a non reference board now too for example. It was one of the popular ones to watercool.

Fine, mybs your right, I should have returned the product straight away as soon as I saw the back of it then, will do in the future. Remember though at the time, I had been lead to believe by many sources that it was in fact a reference card (so I had no worries), so when I saw the back I thought they must have just changed it slightly, didn't realised until it was opened (i.e. warranty void by then) that it wouldn't fit.

Again... about the flashing?! You guys giving a thumbs up or down? and if not flashing, then what do I do to stop the artifacts...? cos this card really needs more volts

Regarding the warranty, are you in North America?

The NA warranty does not is not void when you remove the cooler. Read the actual warranty, it's called the modded warranty for a reason. Fyi those stickers are four the rest of the world not NA.

nah I'm in the UK, ive talked to XFX before and after taking the cooler off, both times its a no for the returning biggrin.gif
post #48 of 59
The way I see it, it doesn't work, and it didn't work before you removed the cooler. XFX will accept the RMA. They have good tech support. They don't want people slandering their products on tech forums because we make them their money. Send it in, see what they say.

Im also mad at how they changed the ref boards for their cards. I planned to watercool with backplates but Im gonna mod my cards to use core blocks and still retain the board heatsink. GL with your discussion tomorrow tongue.gif
