The frequency response of the ER4S is basically in layman's terms, the human hearing 'frequency response'. As you can see, heavily mid and sub bass light. You are supposed to physically feel sub-bass (below 50 Hz).

I admit I was a bit over-zealous in my previous post, and I didn't mean to present my opinion as fact.... For that, I apologize.

Again, in my opinion, bass is a very difficult thing to replicate with open headphones, and 99% of the sets I've tried that are "bass heavy" seem to drown out the mids/highs, resulting in what I consider "overbearing" bass. To me, headphone bass levels should be "additive", in that they enhance the experience without "sticking out", in the same way that a subwoofer ADDS to an already excellent home theater setup. For example, I have some Cerwin Vega VE-12's that I absolutely love for watching movies, because of the fantastic low-frequency capabilities of the speakers; sure, they're not the "highest-fidelity" speakers but they are fun. Listening to music such as acoustic guitar, or anything that's relatively "light" (Sigur Rós is my go-to band for speaker/headphone testing, their album "Ágætis Byrjun" being the first thing I listen to out of any new equipment...if you aren't familiar with them, listen to "Starálfur", "Viðrar vel til Loftárása", "Hoppipolla", and "Olsen Olsen" to see why.... ideally FLAC or another lossless; PM me and I can e-mail you the songs, as I have yet to hear anyone who DIS-likes them), I much prefer my Sonus Faber Cremona Auditors with a Bowers&Wilkins DB1 subwoofer, while for stuff "in-between" the Monitor Audio Gold Reference 20's are fantastic speakers when paired with a strong subwoofer. KEF Reference 201-2 monitors are great as well, but don't have the warmth of the Sonus Faber's, and can be very harsh with source material that isn't perfect...IMO

Anyway, when it comes to gaming, it depends on what it is you want... For under $200-250, you will not find a set of cans with a better soundstage than the ATH-AD700's. If you have a good sound card, and can use CMSS3D/DH, then you will have such an advantage in first-person shooters that it's almost like cheating! Personally, I don't find Sennheiser headphones (2xx/5xx) to have nearly as good of a soundstage but they do have a stronger bass response. Same with the ATH-A700's, which are closed; you lose the soundstage, but get bass with more "physical impact".

There are sounds that I couldn't hear at all with the AD-700. A lot of bass notes just get lost.

Thread Starter
FWIW, anyone looking at the ATH-AD700's and worried about the bass and losing the "immersion" of a game I can vouch that its not as bad as some people have said. There is bass and the lows are not muted (my biggest fear), they just don't have any of the rumbling or physical aspects of the bass of a closed headphone.

My limited attempts to increase the bass on the EQ were not successful because it just messed up all the other frequencies.
