Clean Install of Windows 7 questions.

Thread Starter
I started another thread a little while ago, and it got out of hand as I kind of added too much info to the thread.

Lets keep this one short and simple.

Lets say I am forced to clean reinstall windows 7 (on an empty drive), but I have a backup of my old windows install. I have 2 drives I use, a 128gb ssd (OS and Programs drive) and a 2tb hdd (storage and steam drive)
As people know, games install files/saves in your appdata folder, and your documents folder
(Please point out any other places games install files/saves to, for my sake) and I want to reinstall windows, then drag my game files back into the new windows install.

Is it as simple as that? I will be using the same username on windows, so it will not be conflicting with that or anything.

Also, when I reinstall windows, I will lose my registry files, so when I try to open the games in steam will it simply make the registry files again, or will I get errors?
Saving computer programs is not a problem with me as none of my programs were anything important, they can just be re downloaded.

Thanks people smile.gif

In windows 7 you can create a "system image" and restore you system exactly as it was. Windows 8 they took that feature out.
Steam will just reset itself and be good to go.

All of your games will be fine. Steam will see the files and reinstall them.

I cannot do that, that windows install corrupted and I could not boot with it.

I could backup all the data though, which I did.

During that process I reinstalled windows, so I have a window.old file of my old install(the important one). Can that be used in any way?

I was wondering the same thing. I think he was asking after a fresh install will his saved games load? A system image will install any crap a person may want to get rid of, hence the clean install. I was wondering just that if I was to make a system image it would save the crap I don't want. If I used my old system image I would loose some stuff that I do want.

I've found when it comes to copying files from an old data backup to a new install, a crucial step is missing, entries made to the registry. SO copying the files do not work. However, Steam will install their games to a specific folder, and when that folder is copied over, and Steam is run for the first time (and you point Steam to the copied folder during the install), it will initiate install to the registry.

SO all I can say is, that for Steam, yes you can copy the folder and it will work. But for stand alone games, they need to be reinstalled. But... you can copy over the game save files.

Try gamesave manager. It backs up registry keys and values. (Steam too) (Confirm in changelog/ google)
Make a backup and restore after the clean install. You may want to retain your username as it may be saving the filepath too.

Alternatively, use gamesave manager to scan for savegames. This will give you a list of all the savegames along with the relevant fliepaths. Back these up manually, just in case. Install your games before restoring the backup.

Yes, when I get the computer back up, I will not bring gamesaves over, run each and every game... (~120 games) and let them create their registry entries, then move over the game saves afterward and see if that works.
