99.9% of problems are caused by customer error so how do you tell them that without making them feel stupid? Because, its really easy to do!
Well in a situation like you stated earlier, I would simply say, "I can't guarantee this for any amount of time to stay functional without a new hard drive at least. If it fails, please call me to have it replaced. Sooner or later it is going to have to be swapped out and if I were you I'd just assume do it now."

Them give them some clever analogy like uhh, "what I'm doing is a temp. fix, it's like putting duct tape on you dryer door. Unless you get it fixed, you are going to be going through duct tape like crazy. Only thing is, computer repair isn't as inexpensive as duct tape these days."

lol

I know how you feel! Whenever I upgrade I sell on eBay and almost everytime I get an email... it doesn't work etc etc
I've actually had an email from somebody, after buying a GFX card asking me what it actually does

Only had one sensible one so far as I've just sold my x1900xt and the fan control wasn't working properly. As I'd been watercooling it I hadn't noticed it and offered a full refund. Got to RMA it now, damn Sapphire

Hey Dman,

I`m also a small business man and I operate on that very basic law of business, "time is money". If people don`t like it, let them find some sucker who either is too "easy" or kindhearted to stay in business for long.

In the PC repair business it's pay 1st,repair later...
If they follow the steps that you give them then there shouldn't be a problem later on.

I have learned alot in the couple weeks I have been up and running!

1. Its alot of work
2. Its alot of work
3. Its extremely hard to beat newegg.com so I dont try!
4. My shipping is alot less than their's
5. If your buying from newegg.com you probably know enough about PC's to not need my service's, because you know how to use google!
6. I hate Dell
7. You cant make any money on hardware sells
8. You can have ppl buy your hardware and prey they dont know what they bought and have no idea how to install it so you can make a little money!
9. Its really fun when you make someone happy

AND ADVERTISING IS KEY!

I want to advertise on overclock.net but no one has contacted me yet!
If nothing else you guys know me and you get to help out a fellow OC'er support his habit I badly need 2 8800GTX and a new QX6700 Quad-Core! LOL!

Neither can I.
Yes, people are dumb and dumber.

Sorry that you have to deal with them on a regular basis.

lol, A computer is a magic box......its new fangeled technoledgy <<<---as the old timers say **miss spelled on purpose**

I use this analogy........If you put trash in your car and among the trash is a winning lottery ticket for $10000000000000 and you take your car to a car detailer and you tell him to clean your car and make it look like new but, you didn't tell the guy theres a winning lottery ticket somewhere in there is it his fault he through it out!

No, you dont!

If you buy a car from a dealer and take the car out and wreck it because you dont know how to drive do you go back to the dealer and tell him its his fault because he sold you the car or because he built it!

I can go on.................The point is it's not our/my fault your stupid!

I won't answer as I'm assuming your thread title question is a rhetorical question, as it wasn't punctuated with a question mark .

Try to remember that there is a difference between knowledge and intelligence. People who are sufficiently ignorant might appear to be stupid, but unless you give them a few IQ tests you won't know if they're stupid or not. Please try not to misinterpret ignorance, for lack of intelligence, or for that matter, a lot of knowledge, for a lot of intelligence.

It might be frustrating for those of us who know a fair bit about computers, when people who know very little, use them in a way which appears stupid. However, most of the time, if properly educated and informed, the majority of seemingly "stupid" PC users would take the correct course of action and make the correct decisions when faced with computer related problems.

I strongly dislike intellectual laziness, but I also dislike intellectual elitism. If we start to collectively develop a supercilious mindset towards those people in society who do not know as much as us, or who are genuinely less intelligent than us, we risk becoming intellectual bigots and creating an ethos of intellectual supremacy within our own social group/s.

I've got no problems with venting a little frustration, but a little balance is needed if we're to try and maintain an objective perspective on this kind of thing.

I've been self-employed for over a year now and I know how tough it is; especially when you have to deal with awkward customers. Just make sure your customers know your basic policies up front and make sure you have insurance that covers legal costs. Getting sued can easily destroy a small business, not only financially, but also reputation wise.

There are many "pros" to being your own boss. There are also many, many "cons" as well and much more risk. Running a small business is not necessarily an easy way to make a living, especially at the beginning. Advertising is important and the most powerful form of it is personal recommendation. If you always strive to provide the best possible service and product possible, your reputation will serve as the best advertising you'll ever have. What's more, it's free!

I Hope everything works out for you iamme. It's hard work, but if you can pull it off, it can be worth it .

Highly-Annoyed

As a customer, I would want to test it out before you left from a repair. That could save your a$$ because it worked last time you were in the room.
