Like AMD, Intel realizes that HSA is the future, hence why Intel is focusing more and more on increasing IGP performance instead of adding more cores. Right now Intel is still behind in Graphics due to lack in expertise(including drivers) & inexperience but those can improve through trial and error and by the time Intel driver matures(Skylake?) they can leverage the die shrink advantage(a lot more transistors) to compete with APU graphics.
Stopped reading right there. What did Charlie say about Bulldozer again?

The rest of your post: " Intel is Doomed" rolleyes.gif

I never once said Intel is doomed. I stated that if things continue how they are projected to this year that Intel will not have the performance crown. I then stated that it was likely that Intel would be changing course. So, things probably won't continue given current trends.

I appreciate the sarcastic responses in respond to math and logic. Nothing like making a claim and backing it up with evidence and listening to people go "LOL WALL OF TEXT"

I don't care if you disagree with me, but at least have the integrity to write a proper response. I don't understand how people can get so defensive over a company that makes a consumer product.

hey man im with you math is math so if people choose to look the other way and stay ignorant then thats their choice. Thanks for the math break down of the trends, makes sense to me.

started my pc building with a PII x6 1100T and now running a msi mpower and 3770k. I suport whatever camp has the best product for me. But I am highly looking forward to steamroller (with reservations) because i actually do prefer AMD and don't like intel's king of the hill attitude and strong arming people. So basically if steamroller is on par with hasewell etc going forward and can beat my 3770k rig then i will happily make the switch back and build a second rig, and probably save money doing it tongue.gif

You have listed an assumption based on AMD IPC growing at 30% rate indefinitely( with no evidence but the Steamroller rumors) and Intel CPU performance growing only 10% every other generation indefinitely.
I don't see why a rational response is needed to a theories based on such weak assumptions.

I could say" If AMD keep bleeding $500 million a quarter like they did in Q4 this year they will go under in a year." But we both know that unless the AMD management is insane that will not happen. Same goes for your claim that" If Intel keep growing 10% every other gen while AMD grows 30% every year eventually AMD will have the performance crown."

My point is that Intel doesn't have a lot of room to squeeze out performance have no need to cannibalize SB-E sale with a stronger/6core mainstream chip. You can notice this because Intel is working on power consumption, not performance now Performance/Watt.

Fixed it for you.

You interpret Intel's lack of performance gain on die shrink as a sign of weakness, a sign that the Core Architecture have run its course and have been pushed to the limit. The truth is that Intel strategy since Conore have been prioritizing mobile processor first, so it should be no surprise that Intel have been focusing more on the best performance per watt.

Do you not see that the highest margin market is the server market? Do you not see that the mobile market is growing while desktop is shrinking? Is it a coincidence that power consumption & performance/watt are much more critical than the "Multi-thread Performance crown at max OC" in these market?

If Intel needed to destroy AMD's top line chip, they could easily leverage their tremendous die size advantage into putting 2 more Cores on Ivy(160mm^2), get it up to Sandy's size(216mm^2) and still keep TDP far below PD's 125W. But that is not necessary in this market, not when the Desktop market is not growing, not when Intel can book $600 from the same wafer AMD can only book $200.

Silicon is almost at its limit right now. If AMD wants to compete they are going to have to follow Intel in its transition from silicon based CPUs. I'd have to guess that Intel is probably far ahead of AMD, simply because they got more money for R&D.
Silicon is good for at least another decade, maybe two....

Plus AMD's superior GPU technology would gave them a huge edge. While we won't see full on HSA till late 2014 or 2015 earliest, it would take Intel even longer to implement it.

The large FPU advantage that it would grant AMD would give it a huge lead in the super computer field.

Now if only AMD can improve the integer side of the chip as well....

Those xeon phi cards still do less with more wattage then a comparable Nvidia card. Even though Intel could migrate that tech into HSA compatible tech(probably would be easier to code for as well as it's x86 based), they would need to start working on it now. Not when HSA becomes a standard.
The Xeon Phi power is in the lower learning curve. Hopefully, HSA will bring a more universal and standard way to code for GPUs.

10% IPC but at lower power consumption.

The question is not "why do we need it...." its "why the hell not!?"

Its called capitalism and free markets. If there is an interest for such things and a demand then SUPPLY it. "Build it and they will come" you want consumer markets to crawl when they should be at a full out sprint. Consumer markets push innovation just as much as business or military needs for more computing power. case in point folding teams? how about start up engineering firms? these are people who don't care about the power they use really but need the raw horsepower to make their goals happen.....so give it to them!
Because the consumer market has no idea what they want. Most enthusiasts barely understand how CPUs work or their features.

Talking about profits and such, last years Intel retail edge deal was a 3930K for 200$ if I'm not mistaken, and no firm will sell their products for a loss unless they're on the verge of bankruptcy or clearing stocks to introduce a new product. Considering that we're shelling out 570$ for the same CPU intel has some serious advantage over AMD.

I'm down for AMD to make a serious come back like anyone else. I am not expecting it with a supposed 30% IPC increase coming into Steamroller. Piledriver SHOULD have been BD and PD should have been this supposed Steamroller. AMD is always 2 steps behind because of their own design flaws. Same disaster happened with the P1-P2 series.

I honestly don't know what AMDs deal is. Its like we sit here and see Intels profits and all theorize that they must invest it heavily into their CPU line but we all know they don't. More than likely they just shove it into corporate wallets. AMD has nobody to blame but themselves for dropping the ball consecutively on 2 major core releases. At some point they have to sit down and ask themselves what the hell they expect to achieve.

Here's hoping they'll bring the competition back.

Now you're sounding like a zealot. Who got hurt? Whoever bought it before finding out how it performed and was disappointed probably learned a valuable lesson about researching.

And I'd check out teksynidicate for the FX-8350 .vs. 3570K .vs. 3770K video, that's good evidence that AMD is making a small come back.
This. But green team? That's Nvidia.
