WD Black vs WD RE4

Thread Starter
Any major difference between these 2 drives other than the prices?

BLACK: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_344&products_id=21089

RE4 : http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_344&products_id=16395

i REALLY need a new drive as my current Seagate drive is starting to die.

I DON'T really want SPEED, just reliability. but of course it cant be too slow.

any help will be rep+

The RE4 has functioning TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery) which is critical for RAID, as it prevents drives from dropping out when they shouldn't.

The RE4 is also a tiny bit faster IME but significantly more reliable. You can think of them as "binned" Blacks.

If you EVER think that you might RAID your drives, the RE4 is the better option.

Thanks, for the reply +rep. but also would the TLER have any negative impacts for single drive operation?

WD Red will be cheaper than RE4 if you're going to shove them in RAID at the consumer or SoHo level.

If you are not going to be doing this at all, then skip RE4, WD Red and any other type of drive that is specifically built RAID or other scenarios. In these cases where you are using a single drive for operation, a HDD is literally a HDD.

Hitachi Deskstar would be my choice in this regard, but it won't matter squat which drive you get for your scenario smile.gif

If you want a higher warranty you can go down the Hitachi Ultrastar route. As a reference point, a 3TB Ultrastar should run you about $220, still cheaper than a RE4 at the same capacity.

WD Red are super quiet, and run very cool- however, I've had bad luck with them recently----that's in the U.S. They are also very slow on reads from my tests, but you said speed doesn't matter. They would be a good budget alternative as would the WD Green drives, but I think you would change your mind once you see how slow they can be during some work. I would go with the WD Black drives, and enjoy the higher speeds, and better warranty.

The 3TB Red is hardly slow on reads: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/2092/3/ (though you did say your tests, so might not be fair here!)

Though when paired with the correct RAID configuration, this should be mitigated.

Hard right to avoid pissing match......G-forc...e.....s

Vision blurry, hard to breathe...........

OP mentioned single drive........*crackle*........*static*........(though you did say your tests, so might not be fair here!).............*all-clear siren*

Successfully cleared the minefield, Crisis Averted!

For a single drive, I would go with WD Blue before Red or RE4, but I would end up with WD Black just for the warranty.

The blacks would be a tad bit louder because of their agressive seeking.

Would the seeking be loud? is it noticeable? how does it compare to the RE4? i wouldn't mind paying extra just for quietness (my room is VERY quiet and moderate seeking is audible)
