Windows explorer slow to sort/list contents on windows 7

When I first open a folder, it's sorted immediately alphabetically. But I want to change this - to sort by date for instance - it will take a long time, maybe 15 seconds to reorder a folder with a few dozen files and subfolders. It's gradually gotten worse at time - at first it was nearly instantly, now I can wait a long time for it to sort. It's not locking up during this process - the green progress bar across the address bar slowly but smoothly moves across as the operation completes.

In some folders, sorting them by date is the default sorting method that it remembers, so it pops them up alphabetically but then automatically begins to sort them.

Similarly, I've gotten to the point where it's beginning to show preview images in in image folders slower, having them pop up relatively slow when before it was instant.

It isn't the performance of any particular hard drive, because I've had these same issues happen with 3 different drives. Nor is hard drive perforamnce as a whole slow. Just particularly windows explorer listing/sorting files and folders.

Anyone have any idea what the problem may be and how to fix it?
