How does it compare to the top end air coolers today or even the H110?

You mean the Venomous X? I think it is on the level below the NH-D14 or Silver Arrow, so basically a just-below-top-end air cooler. Better than the H60, but slightly below the H80i or H100.

Corsair's H80, H100, H80i & H100i have a very hit and miss dependability record. Many more problems than any of the other name CLC out there. I have no expectation their H90 & H110 will fare any better.
Caveat emptor

Venomous X is a good cooler.. and it is quiet. But it's not in the same league as the big twin or even big single core coolers. Size does matter. When I changed from a Noctura NH-U12P with 2 fans to Phanteks PH-TC14PE my temps dropped 7-8c. Venomous X is a couple degrees cooler than U12P in most reviews.

For me it would depend on price and what will fit. The new Phanteks PH-TC12DX is same price where I am so I would consider it as well as several others; True Spirit 120 and if it will fit True Spirit 140.

In America PerformancePC is selling the DeepCool Assassin for $39.95. This is the Alpenfohn K2 that sell for £60 ($90) here and is one of the best coolers right on the market.

I look at coolers as a long term investment that can be moved on to new build over many years. The first big twin tower coolers are still among the top coolers available. NH-D14, Cogage Arrow, Thermalright IFX-14 and Silver Arrow are 4-5 years old now and going strong. I've upgraded my Cogage Arrow to TY-140 fans but that's the only change.

imo single tower 120mm based coolers don't get much nicer than the Ven-X. There are probably better value coolers and obviously it's not quite on par with the big dogs, but it's most definitely respectable for just about any cooling needs you throw at it (plus the thing just oozes quality). Only reason I'll ever replace it is for the cleaner form factor of a clc.

the beauty of the Ven-X is when you pair it with a high speed fan, its performance scales very well.
and that's why I love this cooler biggrin.gif

Any news on whether the included LGA 1156 socket mount will work with Haswell's 1150?
afaik 1155/1156=1150 as far as cooler compatibility goes.

Regarding the original question: the ven x is arguably the very best 120mm fan based air cooler. Put two GTAP15 on it and it will cool as well as any high end heatsink out there.
