I want one of these!

Not many Mac users around here - we use SSDs, too, you know. I've a 512GB Crucial m4 in my one-year old (almost) MacBook Pro but I am anxiously awaiting this:

Right at $600 for the 960GB 7mm M500? I can handle that. Speeds that will exceed those of the m4 series? I can handle that, too.

Anyone else out there anticipating the release of this monster?

welcome to OCN!

sweet ssd! yeah I will be looking forward not so much to the crucial but probably the samsung or intel rival products that they will inevitably be coming with. So im glad crucial is pushign the industry ( i just personally can't bring myself to buy one because of the "1 year" death cycle they had going on for a while in some of their drives. But who know if the price is right with good reviews in the future then im game to try them smile.gif

There aren't many mac users here you'll find lol. If you liek the OS then thats one thing but you'll find most people here don't like apple because of the prohibitive prices they charge and locked down nature of their systems and upgrading ( soldered memory and hard drives etc. that type thing)

but if you are into hackentosh or other such things you'll find this is a great community for pc building and help. so welcome thumb.gif

I don't think it's worth the money, I mean you're most-likely not gonna see a noticeable difference with the M4.

Thanks so much - I'm actually waiting with great anticipation, as well, the new Mac Pro (promised for 2013). I won't buy a Retina MBP because of the closed nature of the beast. I've always liked Crucial/Micron for the price/performance ratio - and I've had no problems with mine (after owning it for almost a year). The MAIN reason that I push Crucial for Mac owners is not only because of the price/performance ratio but also for the fact that you can actually update the firmware using a Mac - no need to boot into Windows.

And, yeah, I'm a Windows user, too. I mainly hang out on the Apple boards and come here to push Sean's buyer's and information guide - it's just a great guide for those using any OS.

Thanks again for the welcome...

I think folks who are considering buying the Crucial M500 960GB are probably after the capacity rather than speed. At under $600, it's actually quite tempting. I've got a couple of laptops (which are a pain the neck to open) with 750GB HDDs that need to be replaced. If I can get a 960GB SSD, for $550 or so, I'd strongly consider using that instead of 500GB SSDs. It'll be mighty convenient not needing to carry around an external HDD. Let's hope retail channels don't mark it up excessively.

I've a note into Crucial sales to see what the retail price is going to be - the press release only stated "under $600" - and, yes, laptop capacity is what I'm shooting for. When I get one, I'm going to have to look at the 'other' investments that I'll need to make, e.g., buying 1TB externals for clones instead of the the 750GB that I use now. So it's not going to be a cheap upgrade, and I'm not going to worry about any significant speed bumps...

You can get 2.5" 2TB externals for $135-140 so it's not that bad. I just bought a couple of Samsung 840 500GB but looks like I might RMA those and get the Crucial M500 960GB instead. I've gotten used to having 750GB space on the laptop now so a decrease to 500GB would take some adjusting to. With this, I can do a straight clone from the existing HDD and I'd even have extra space (which I'll probably just leave over-provisioned for now). Funnily enough, the laptops these SSDs are going into only cost $650-800. The SSD would cost the same as the laptop. tongue.gif

That's sort of what I intend on doing - just using 1TB drives (which I can get cheap) and putting them in my 3 drive enclosures for clones. I have a buttload of external drives, already - about 11TB of Thunderbolt (remember, I'm on a MacBook Pro!) drives and 5TB of FireWire 800 drives. 6 TB of that is already used for incremental backup (I'm just a backup freak).

And, whilst remembering that I'm on a MacBook Pro, you must also realize that I paid over $3K for this machine (with tax), plus the $100 for 16GB of RAM, $600 (when I bought it ) Crucial m4 512GB, and all of those peripherals!
