My 8600 GT running at 86C

Thread Starter
Hi,

This is my first post here. I bought this card along with my computer nearly 5 years back. It's made by Palit, I've never over clocked it, it's running at 84-90C on stock settings, can I overclock this.

Thanks.

Well your first issue is the card brand (poor cooling solution)
if you must overclock this then use aftermarket cooling, if not then upgrade to a new card.

Yikes. that's hot.
Being an old card i'd probably re apply the thermal paste, it's probably all dried up under that cooler now.
Running at that sort of temperature, i wouldn't OC unless it drops by a lot.

You should be idling at 35 max and have no more than 80 on load.
I had a GT430 with a busted fan once and the whole computer switched off cos the card reached 100c, put a new fan on it and it was all good. Maybe an aftermarket cooler will help you overclock.
But if you're gonna spend money, you may aswell get a better card.

I wouldn't run a GPU over 90C in my opinion. My 570 on stock hits 84 on full load and around 40C on idle so wouldn't overclock it. I would possibly think about upgrading the GPU to a newer one just because it's been used for 5 years and the hardware inside is probably on its last legs at those temps and definitely wouldn't recommend an over clock.

You can pickup a decent gaming GPU that will be much faster and have a much better cooling system for about 100 - 150 dollars if you look around. Not gonna play Crysis or battlefield on max mind, but could find a decent mid range card for that price or look at a high end one from a couple of years ago that could be much beefier than your current card. What games are you wanting to play?

Replace TIM
Even a crappy 8600gt wont run that hot or shouldnt

Also setup a fan profile using after burner to control fan speeds.

if you must get a new gpu it is best to give us a budget and your current rig's details using the rig builder in the top right hand corner.

However if all your doing is playing indie games, 5 bucks worth of tim will keep your 8600Gt going and you save alot of money.

Well if your using a Athlon X2 or C2D then I would just dump that and upgrade to a APU.
A A8 or A10 would be more then enough for a basic user. Though I would wait for the newer APU's to come out if you can.
