Standard for 7970 to need memory within 150MHz of core clock?

Thread Starter
Hi all,
I was wondering, specifically to those who use or have used the HD 7970, whether it's normal for the cards to require the core clock speed to be no greater difference than 150MHz above the memory clock speed?

To illustrate, here's an example:
- Core 1100MHz, Memory 950MHz, this is accepted by the GPU
- Core 1100MHz, Memory 900MHz, this is not accepted by the GPU and sets the memory to 1345MHz (or around that, I'm recalling what happened from my memory)
- Core 1100MHz, Memory 1300MHz, this is accepted by the GPU

I've tried using the Catalyst Control Center and MSI Afterburner both of which produce the same results as above. If this is standard for the GPU to do this, is there a way I can workaround this restriction? I've read some people setting memory clock far lower than core clock (e.g. for purposes of mining and saving power/lower temperature) but no explaination offered as to how they did it.

Thanks in advance for any help and apologies if this isn't in quite the right category,
Ixel.

950 is lowest you can set for 3d speeds.

No it's not, you have to set unofficial over clocking to 2 in msi afterburner and then you can set memory all the way down to 685 i believe

Which version, 2.2.1 doesn't allow me to do it.

I see. I'll give that another try again. Last time I tried I'm pretty sure it didn't work if there was a greater gap of 150MHz between the difference of the core and memory clocks. I'll post another update if it works or fails.

Just a final update to say that for some reason it's now working. Perhaps I imagined setting it to 2, but did 1 instead, and that's why it failed last time? I'll obviously need to be careful how low I go with the memory clock, or I may get some odd effects on the screen as I just noted a moment ago. Thanks again smile.gif.
