Mixing Ram Sets Within the Same Manufacturer Round 2

Hello everyone!

I just purchased 4 gigs (2x2gb) of OCZ PC8500 Reaper Ram for $40 on eBay. My question is, could I purchase 4 more gigs of 2x2gb OCZ gold or platinum PC8500 ram later to run alongside it?

I would ideally get 4 more gigs of the reapers, but with my CPU cooler they won't fit, and I really want 8 gigs. I was thinking of mixing these two rams:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227289 (what I just bought on eBay)

with:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227298

So that I can get 8 gigs of ram at 1066.

My next question after that is, if I CAN'T mix two sets like those, would it be possible (or a good idea) to take off the heatsink of one of the reapers so that all 4 could fit in my motherboard? Currently if I installed 4 one would be hitting my s1283 Xigmatek rifle cooler, so 3 would have the cooler and 1 would not.

What you have to remember when mixing rams:

1. Can they run with the same timings?
2. Can they run with the same voltages?

If the two criteria are met it should not be an issue.

Looking at the two sets you linked, they both run at 5-5-5-18 and can run between 2.1~2.2v, so you should be good.

As for taking off the heat sinks on the RAM it is possible, you just need to be sure that you do it very carefully to ensure that you don't damage the dimms once you remove it.

I've personally always removed heat sinks on rams since it really doesn't help at all. There have been tests showing that rams without heat sinks actually run cooler as long as you have air blowing over the dimms.

One last question! I just ordered 2x2gb OCZ reaper PC8500 ram. My current ram runs at the same voltage, around 2.1v, but at 800 mhz and at 4 4 4 12 timings. Here's my plan, put the ram in configuration like this:

Slot 1: 1GB PC 6400

Slot 2: 2GB PC 8500

Slot 3: 1 GB 6400

Slot 4: 2 GB PC 8500

From my understanding, if I put the ram in the right configuration, (slots 1 and 3 are one color, slots 2 and 4 are another), I should still be able to maintain full dual channel AND have 6 gigs of total memory? I of course plan on setting the OCZ reapers to the same settings as my other OCZ ram, which are almost identical.

So, I should be able to have 6 gigs at 800 mhz, somewhere around 2.1v, and 4 4 4 12 timings while running full dual channel?

You can't run 2 sets at 800 4-4-4-12 and then run the other at 1066 5-5-5-18. You have to run all ram sticks at the same timings and voltage to work properly (or to even boot properly I believe).

Now if you run the 1066 to 800 and they can run at 4-4-4-12 at 2.1v then you should be good. That's taking a chance though because not all sticks can run 4-4-4-12.

Thank you for your reply smile.gif.

I should be a bit more clear, though. If on the off chance that they are compatible when set to the same timings and volts, will I be able to keep dual channel, or will it be forced into single channel? and if it is forced into single channel, is it worth it to keep it at 6 gigs or just remove the 2x1 gb sticks to have 4 gigs running dual channel?

You will be able to keep dual channel as long as all the sticks are running at the same timings and volts.
