Power Outage: Gigabit switch no longer Gigabit?

Finally the power has returned after a major wind storm in my province. Now I'm fighting a different storm, the 100Mbit storm!

My TP-Link TL-SG1005D is, or was, an excellent unmanaged gigabit switch. Now all my devices connected to it are only connecting at 100Mbits. The device was not damaged by the power outage, it's connected to a UPS and the UPS did a graceful shutdown of the server it's connected it. I checked the logs and it worked as it should, no reports of surges or brown outs. Just lost power.

I've obviously restarted the switch, all devices and disconnected all devices and re-inserted them 1 by 1. Still 100Mbits.

I'm at a loss.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the setting in the switch to make sure it set to 1gbps? Also have you tried setting your NIC to 1gb manually?

Most Switches negotiate a speed between them and the client by testing the signal quality of the cable. If they aren't going gigabit then either your switch has gone bad or there is something nearby causing enough interference to keep it from jumping to gb. Do you have access to any other switches?

Several. They all work correctly. Just this one is no longer negotiating to gigabit.

My money is on interference.

Are you using properly shielded/terminated cables?

And CAT5 or 6?

All cables are Cat6. It's all in my server rack so I doubt it's interference.

Not all cables are from the same build. Some I made some are from Monoprice.

I'd say at this point if it is not negotiating at Gigabit with different cables or different hosts then may be time to replace it.

It's a shame since me and my roommates all have one and they all work fine.

I think that's my only recourse. I contacted TP-Link since it's only 13 months old.

Even if they replace it for you, i would look at getting a switch from a different manufacturer, such as D-Link/Netgear ect. My experience with TP-Link has always been meh at best. sure they're stuff may work, but its not the best. I still have a d-Link gigabit switch that i bought something like 6-7 years ago and it still worked great the last time i used it (everything is wired up using routers in my house atm, but i still keep 2 switches in case i go to a lan party, both D-link) thumb.gif
