Problem with AMD Stock CPU Fan

Thread Starter
My stock CPU fan is louder than I would like. It is up to 50 C idle. I would like to bring it down a few degrees and make it quieter. I am looking for a nice heatsink between $20 and $30. I would prefer one that isn't huge like the Hyper 212. Any thoughts?

Like a dummy I probably should have specified all of this before hand. I have a Coolermaster HAF 922 with 3 exhaust fans and 1 intake fan. 2 of the exhaust fans and the intake fan I have connected to an NZXT MESH fan controller and they are all at 40%. The back exhaust fan is on the motherboard and I have it set at STANDARD (STANDARD, SILENT, and TURBO are the 3 options)

The CPU is an AMD 965 BE. Look it up because there are 2 different kinds, mine is the Black Edition and it is at stock settings.

The funny thing is that before I put in the fan controller, I had 2 exhaust fans and no intake and the CPU didn't make a noise at all. But that was also before I began playing Path of Exile and Borderlands 2. The top exhaust I transferred from the motherboard to the controller but the speed looks about the same if I look at it going.

So to sum it up, I added 1 more exhaust and 1 intake to a fan controller. So the fan controller has it all going at 40%. The back fan is controlled by the motherboard.

My temps are 48 C when it starts picking up and making the fan noise which makes me think I should invest in an aftermarket heatsink. Right now the fan is at 47 C and it is about halfway as loud as it usually is when I play games.

I do not think anything is broken, I just don't like the noise. I am not worried about it heating up because I have adequate airflow and nothing is OCed.

Look up HAF 922 and look at the diagrams about the fans if you want so you can get a better understanding of my fan situation unless you already know what is causing this.

I forgot to add that my case is very open with a lot of holes which makes me hear every little sound in my PC. A while ago I had to test my hard drive because it made a loud noise when starting up and I came to find out that they all make that noise. It's just that my cases were all closed and they muffled the sounds.

I keep adding stuff but bear with me here. Also when I close games and close almost all programs the temps go down about 2 C and the fan quiets down. It's just when a load is put on it then the fan speeds up and creates a noise. I had 2 programs in the background running just now (Skype, Firefox) and a game called Path of Exile which I can set to high settings graphically because my computer can handle it. The temp went up to 52 C and now after 5 minutes it is down to 51 C and it is still like a jet engine but it is quieting down.

I think I just need an aftermarket heatsink but I don't know the first thing about buying one. I don't want a Hyper 212 because they are too bulky. I would like a slimmer one that is easy to put in. I have never put in an aftermarket heatsink before so I am a bit nervous. The only experience I have is watching tutorials on youtube.

Actually I just bought the Hyper 212 Plus because it had a $10 rebate today so it only cost me $20 altogether. But if you have any tips on how to orient it inside my case that would be helpful too or if you have any insight on how I should set up my fans I would appreciate it.

Good choice on the cooler , that will help a lot. Those small fans on the stock coolers are squealers.
It sounds like you don´t have coolnquiet enabled as that would explain the temps not dropping down.
There´s an easy way to tell , run cpuz and check to see if you cpu drops down to 800mhz in idle.
You can overclock that CPU a bit without raising voltages , kind of a waste to have a black edition and not overclock it.

The orientation of your cooler is sometimes decided for you depending on the motherboard . My last MB was a Sapphire Pure 790GX and would only allow me to position it upwards . It should be fine either way. I actually liked it because it went straight into the 140mm top extract fan on my Antec 300. You can also buy a bracket to change the orientation if you want.

You have a great case , so airflow shouldn´t be a problem. As for placement of fans , there´s so many choices. I used to run 2 GTs for intake with a 140mm top exhaust 120mm rear exhaust , all running off of a fan controller, and for me that was perfect, but each setup is different , and other people have other ideas wich work better for them. There´s a few stickies at the top of this subforum you should go through , they are very helpful, like this one,
http://www.overclock.net/t/357993/official-air-cooling-forum-essentials-thread
Replacing the cooler is easy , just get yourself prepared.
You will need some isypropyl or rubbing alcohol (pharmacy)some cotton tips or earbuds to clean off your old paste and some new thermal paste. I can recommend MX2/3 or 4 , easy to work with , no cure time. There are different ways for applying it , With DHT (your 212) and flat base coolers I use the same application method , I just stretch a plastic (thin shopping bag type) over my finger , kind of like a finger condom lol. and spread the paste very thinly and evenly over the CPU first . lot of different different methods out there, just don´t put too much. A dot about the size of a grain of rice or 2 should be ample.

Also when you get a chance fill in your rigs specs, it´ll make it easier for us to help you.

Thanks for all the help and input.

My specs are AMD 965, Radeon 6850, 8 GB 1600 RAM, 128 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, and some accessories like an internal card reader, USB hub, fan controller, and DVD writer and blu ray player.
