Can Xonar Essence STX do surround over spdif?

Just wonder if I can use this to power my surround reciever over SPDIF, because the only dolby feature I can see on it is for stereo ?
Depends on the source that you're trying to pass I would think. SPDIF can pass DTS or Dolby Digital, but it cannot support DTS-MA or PCM above two channels. If you only have the stereo option, I would guess you're passing it PCM.

I will add, I don't own that card but I do know a little about SPDIF limitations. Hopefully someone with the card or a proper audiophile will turn up and give you a technical explanation smile.gif

Not sure how I do it now, but I use the SPDIF from my motherboard to give me 5.1 surround, so that works. just wonder if this card is stereo only
post #4 of 11
It has a DolbyDigitalLive encoder, it will encode 5.1/7.1 from Windows to DolbyDigital 5.1 or pass through pre-encoded 5.1.

When passing from my sound card to reciever digitally (SPDIF) , is there any benifit from using this card compared to the onboard SPDIF?

Just wonder if its worth getting the Essence STX instead of Xonar DX? (Its half the price) then I could just continue to use the onboard SPDIF when I listen on speakers

FYI my plan is to buy a set of HD 598 instead of the old HD 555 I have now

If your using a digital out then there's no difference, the STX is just a better DAC/amp (analogue outputs). Whether or not you'll be able to hear that it's twice as good as a DX with any particular headphone is a never ending subject for debate/argument smile.gif

A few things:

1. Spdif over your onboard only supports DDL encoding and DTS encoding if you have one of the kinda spiffy x-fi integrated chips that don't work really well.

2. If you are only using the digital, go for the DSX, the essence only really offers a very well built headphone amp that would require very expensive headphone to truly notice.

3. The DDL encoder will allow the card to properly output a true 5.1 signal for all items, spdif by itself cannot push uncompressed 5.1 to anything, its very annoying.

Some notes:

The Dolby headphone gimmick is cool but really not worth it on a card like that which supports DS3D 2X or EAX 5.0, they will do a better job in a headphone environment over DD Headphone.

I would get this ASUS Xonar DSX, it supports DDL encoding and matches the DX in most applications and bests it in Dynamic Tests, go figure.

That's my two cents.

Getting a 60$ soundcard with Sennheiser HD 598 seems abit wrong dont it?
Not really, The leap over integrated is insane, also, you would be better off plugging your Sennheiser's directly into your receiver. That is most likely a better amp.

(I cant read and happen to be doing too much at once.)

DS3D 2X or EAX 5.0 are useless unless you play very old games where you want to check the EAX box in the audio menu of the game. The last games to use EAX/OpenAL were Bioshock, Call of Juarez, and Kane and Lynch. Those games were published years ago.

I read posts over and over where people ask if a card supports EAX, OpenAL, or DS3D 2.5 and I wish there were a way to easily show them that these are discontinued features.
