Xonar Essence ST Card

Thread Starter
I just replaced an older sound card with a Xonar Essence ST. It's working but the volume is much too low with both headphones or speakers. I have every option available (that I know) turned all the way up, including the sound control in W7, Spotify and the Card control, itself. In the Xonar Sound Center it's set to 2 speaker, sample rate of PCM 96, Headphone analog output and SPFDIF is set to PCM.

Any suggestions on what might work?

There should be three volumes, inside the application, the Windows mixer (SndVol) and the Xonar Audio Center.

The headphone amp especially should be plenty loud enough, what headphones have you got? Have you tried the higher gain settings?

I have all three turned up to the max, including all mixer settings. I just can't get the volume I want. My headphone are AKG - K99.......excellent headphone and worked fine with my other soundcard.

I'd try re-installing the driver, or maybe try the Xonar-Unified driver - some people have had issues with Asus's drivers. You shouldn't be having volume issues with a 32 Ohm headphone.

I did all of that and same results. I just can't get any decent volume out of it. There's no way a sound card install should be this difficult.

Make sure the power is plugged into the back of the card.

I own the Essence STX version. When you select headphones, make sure to click on that hammer icon next to it, to change the gain level to what your headphone is rated at. I use the headphone out the back of the card, not the front connection.

You can't do this with the 3rd party driver, you have to do it with the Asus driver software. For whatever reason its missing in the 3rd party driver, or it was the last time I tried it.

You might have done this already, I don't know.
