Since you are in Canada and there is no such thing as SEALs in the Canadian army, I suspect a bit of sarcasm.
In the USA, it is not uncommon to meet people who are well trained with guns. On my last trip to Florida, I went rock'n rolling with an American buddy there ...and I dont mean the music. I can put a .223 chunk in an apple at 300 ft. At a 1000 yard, I might hit a barn if it's not too windy, much less a watermelon.
I have never met a dog lover or a gun owner I didn't like and trust.
