Did you have to modify the mounting bracket at all for that cooler? I have the same setup, I just wish I had the guts to cut open a processor I paid $300 for.

^ No, I havent seen the need to mod the mouting bracket since the unique (stupid) design of the AC freezer allows the oddly shaped copper base to sit firmly atop the venice core diode... however if I continue to have mounting and proper cooling problems like I am having, Ill probably get a different cooler since I dont really even like the thought of this 578g tower of doom sitting atop my naked venice...

Maybe some simple watercooling (closed loop and what not) barring that, somethat that comes with its own custom mounting plate so I can be assured that the correct amount of pressure is being put upon the diode, and then the rest of the weight of the cooler being distributed among screws/washers/mounting plate/etc. (scythe ninja? tuniq? I dont know what really IS a good cooler for a IHS-less chip.

EDIT: also there is little to no risk of damaging the CPU by removing the IHS as I did, as you can see the blade can never touch the transistors inside, it just BARELY makes it far enough to cut all the way through the black goo-stuffs (a stroke of PURE LUCK that I seem to never run by made my day haha) -- although I will say, trying to mount the damned freezer 64 into this chip is a VERY nerve-racking experience since it is so huge and cumbersome, and uses the stock mounting bracket (and weighs in at nearly 600g!!!)

Did you manage to get your Freezer 64 properly mounted? Im worried about doing this and then having a HSF that doesn't make firm contact.

Are the A64 dies made of fart skin or what ? Naked cores has never been a concern with the AthlonXPs why would it be one now ?

Ive got it up and running (been folding for several days now, and the temps are GREAT) with one stipulation, I had to turn the case on its side to keep the ACfreezer in contact with the die... it was a trying process and Im actually still trying to figure out a way to rig it up so I can put the case back upright and still have good die contact.

Ive tried astringing it up, using shims to get the freezer to clamp down onto the die hard enough, and even tied the mounting clip handle to the mobo in order to keep the maximum amount of clamping force on the CPU... no dice, the only way its good (and I mean good, 35C at idle, 48C at load) is when the case is down horizontally on my desk, and I rig my calc book to sit atop the freezer64... although I backed down my overclock to 2500 right now, as Im going to wait for xmas, take the stock heatpipe cooler from the opty Im getting, use the ACfreezer64 on my new opty, and then mod the retention bracket on the ASUS board I have. All this to have the stock HSF from the opty make perfect contact with the naked venice CPU. (after lapping the stock HSF, of course)

Ill update this thread again after the xmas fun with updates of temps/screenies/stability once Ive got the opty HSF on this venice cpu. (however I make no promises of when Ill be done) since I need to find a few more components for the system for the venice, the opty is being migrated into my sig rig, and the venice will be tossed into a slightly older rig (powered by linux/win2k dual boot) for use as my first overclocked file server (and full time folding machine)

subscribed... will like to see the temp drops as well. If only I had a spare CPU to test this on Would of liked to seen you knock the IHS off your opty though, that would of shown true sack

he could just lap it off I guess? 30minutes at something like 60 grit will get rid of it, and you'll be left with a flat HS as well? although you'll need to move up through a fair few grits after that to remove the grooves?

Actually, maybe your boss who had the box cutter has a belt sander? Use that if possible, save your elbows the trouble
