Computer does not wake from sleep, requires a hard reboot

I am not 100% sure what forum would be appropriate for my question, since I'm not certain what the culprit is, but the rig in question has an Intel processor, so it seemed appropriate to post here.

Basically the problem is the computer is set to never hibernate as it has an SSD (main OS is Windows 7 64-bit), never sleep, and there is a monitor turn off period of 10 minutes (no screen saver). Periodically, when the screen turns off and some time passes, something crashes, and the system becomes unresponsive. Moving the mouse and trying the keyboard has no effect, and restart button doesn't seem to work. All I can do is hold the power button to shut down and then reboot, getting "Windows has encountered an error" and do I want to start as normal, repair, etc. I usually just "start as normal" and everything works just fine until the next time thins happens.

Problem is, it happens around once a day now.

To explain why I am having trouble diagnosing this issue, I will list the components and their configuration, and what I am seeing.

* The system is the second one listed in my signature. Intel core i5 2400 (auto voltage, overclocked by raising each multiplier by 4 bins), Gigabyte ga-z68-ud3h-b3 (latest firmware, one before the UEFI bios, as I did not trust the stability of that one by reports).

* Memory is 16GB (4 sticks) of Samsung's 30nm RAM set to 1866MHz 9-9-9-24-2T at 1.5V for full stability. VTT was also raised ever so slightly to accommodate 4 RAM modules for stability. Memory and processor overclocks are completely solid, not pushing the envelope at all, tested multiple times for stability.

* Storage is 1 90GB Corsair Force 3 (latest firmware) and a mechanical hard drive. Hibernation is off, defragmentation is off, followed SeanWebster's full optimization guide for SSDs. I do have C3/C6 enabled in the BIOS, but hibernation's manually turned off anyway, and Sleep function is set to "never". EIST and any power saving features like the Speed Step technology are enabled.

* Graphics card is a Sapphire 7970 OC (Dual-X). I can't remember when the problem started, but it's persisted at least through 12.11 of various iterations and currently remains with Catalyst 13.2 beta. One interesting thing is that the computer case has a large window so I can see the GPU. When the monitor turns off, the card enters the zero-core state or what not, and the fans on it stop spinning. When I move the mouse to turn the display back on, the fans begin to spin again around 3-4 seconds later, and everything proceeds as normal. When the system crashes in the way described above, the fans remain spinning with the monitor turned off - they don't stop. So I don't think this has anything to do with the card going to sleep and not turning back on. I have tried turning ULPS off just in case - same result.

* HD Graphics driver is up to date and the controller is on. I also have Lucid Virtu (non-MVP) enabled and running in the background for some energy savings / lower GPU temps - helps a bit.
----

Here is some random information to consider about the motherboard. It has been driving me crazy in terms of compatibility / stability issues with any hardware changes and some software changes. For example, and it's a known thing with this motherboard, periodically I get a BIOS error that the computer has recovered from an unstable overclock and the BIOS has been reset to stock settings. I then enter the BIOS, and in fact all the settings remain as I saved them: with the processor and RAM slightly overclocked. I proceed to reboot as normal, and all is well for a long time. Any time I disassemble the system, to say move it to another case, I have to plug everything in very methodically, or else there will be all sorts of boot failures until everything is just right. Never had such issues with a motherboard until this one. Then yesterday, I was updating Intel's HD driver (as recommended by Windows Update), and there was a blue screen crash, followed by a slew of troubleshooting, safe mode booting, cleans, driver reinstalls... Even tried downloading the updated driver directly from Intel. Somehow I finally got it to work well, and after one of the reboots, I had another boot failure with a message that the BIOS was corrupted or something like that and needed to be re-written from a back-up. That was great, since the re-write went fine, and the system was back to normal. And then the system did not "wake up" today again, and after holding the power button and rebooting, I was greeted with the same error.

So basically it's a waste of time to have to reboot like this, wait for the BIOS to restore, enter the BIOS to make sure all the settings are good, boot into Windows. For a reason I do not understand.
---

Here are my guesses as to what might be happening.

1. Something related to graphics. Either drivers, or configuration, or... who knows.
2. The motherboard is odd and temperamental... some software errors(?)
3. Some sort of a hard drive-related issue, based on suspend modes getting messed up
4. Have I mentioned I hate the motherboard? It works great until these errors pop up. Never while the computer is in use, but frequently when changing components, updating drivers, during some boots, or when the system freezes with the screen off.

Any ideas or troubleshooting tips for me? Thank you for reading my essay frown.gif It's a long-term problem, and I felt it was important to write out everything I've observed that could be relevant.

This started happening more recently. The overclock configuration's been the same for a long time with no issues. The overclock error is common to this particular motherboard, some claim without even any overclocking it can pop up.

Oh ok. I was going to say how to troubleshoot what it was but if its been stable for awhile and other users are having the same issues with no overclocks sounds more like a bad board to me then.

I've just gone through the Windows power options again and changed a couple of things to be on the safe side (like USB link power state to always be active and such)... testing it out for a while.

Under power management, have you placed ACPI Suspend type to S1
PME Event Wake Up [Enabled]
Power On by Ring [Enabled]
Resume by Alarm [Disabled]
Power On By Mouse [Enabled

have you updated BIOS to the F12 released 3/21/2012
post #7 of 7

Thank you. Yes, the BIOS is F12, as I mentioned the latest before the UEFI version.

I will have a look at the settings you mentioned in a bit. I don't think I have some of those enabled, as I didn't think Power On By Ring was applicable. I know Power On By Mouse is enabled (from memory).
