Going to College, alternatives to campus wifi

Thread Starter
I'll be living on campus at college in the fall. They provide free WiFi on campus, however after checking their network for blocked ports during a college visit, not only will gaming not be possible, but neither will remote access to my home network in it's current setup. Their network is also very slow even at non-peak times.

Are there any alternatives to using their WiFi, assuming I can't purchase my own internet connection their (I can't).

Are there any satellite internet cards I could purchase that would provide a decent connection?

What about some kind of antenna amplifier paired with a WiFi card. That way I could access neighboring WiFi, assuming it's available?

Are there any other ways to get a decent connection on a campus?

Thank you.

What you're looking for is called a cellular modem.
ATT, Sprint, Cricket, etc. all sell them.
Some have 4G, depending on where you are.
Most require a 2 yr contract for service.
Most have tiered data charges. Not aware of any with unlimited date though.

It's basically get the interwebs from anywhere that there's cell service.

If you have one of those phones that can share their mobile data via WiFi, that is probably your best bet. Of course, you would most likely want to bump up your data plans accordingly.

Tether your smartphone, don't waste your time with a separate cellular modem.

The problem is if campus wifi isn't enough for your usage you're probably going to blow through a 3/4g tiered data plan pretty fast....or if you have an unlimited plan some how they will just throttle you.

Something you may want to check for though is whether or not there are differing accounts for the network. I work at a university and we have more than one network. The free wireless across the entire campus doesn't offer much and most ports are closed and bandwidth limited. However if you sign in with the correct credentials ie: student or employee ids then you have more access. More ports are opened and bandwidth increased. This has held true for me across the past 4 colleges and universities I have attended.

It may also be location limited. Say if you are in the dining halls or library then access is limited but the dorms and activity centers are not limited. Never hurts to check with the IT departments on campus. They could tell you in just a moment.

My campus has a guest network that's open for visitations and such and then a normal network. The normal network is fine for gaming, the download speed is a bit low but not terrible and latency is actually very good, lower than my home network. If you go with a cellular modem you'll probably be dealing is high latencies, which isn't good for gaming.
There is also Ethernet in the dorms, I'd be surprised if there wasn't Ethernet. I would stay off wifi as much as possible for gaming.

Honestly I can't imagine a college network where it isn't possible to game. Maybe try to talk to an actual student and see what the deal is.
