1.5v or 1.65v for x58

Thread Starter 
I'm trying to find some decent 1600 MHz CAS 9 RAM for my Rampage III Extreme, and i' trying to decide if to pick 1.5v or 1.65v sticks. I don't plan to OC the RAM to insane speeds (as long as i can achieve the RAAM stock speed i'm happy), but i'm not sure if to pick the lower voltage one.

I'd choose 1.5V memory because if it's not reliable at that voltage, you can probably make it work well by raising the voltage. OTOH if you start out with memory rated for 1.65V and it doesn't work, you're probably stuck, unless you underclock.

Notice that chip manufacturers don't make any DDR3 chips specified for more than 1.5V. That means if a module is rated for more than that, then its chips are either overclocked or are rejects that failed testing at 1.5V.

Actually, that is false. The chips themselves are on 2 different processes.

Actually, that is false, as a check of the information provided by the chip manufacturers themselves will show:

They shrunk the process, resulting in a higher yield. If you have a higher yield from one process vs another, you would stop producing the lower yield chips.

This is the first time I've heard of smaller feature size resulting in better yields because all other factors being equal, yield tends to be better when feature size is bigger, unless it requires the chip to be super-huge. Why do you think Microchip favors older processes, despite being in the business of producing the world's cheapest, lowest-power microcontrollers? Could you cite some evidence to support that claim that shrink -> higher yield or your earlier claim that 1.65V and 1.5V DRAM chips are made with different processes?
