Hi everyone!

Thread Starter
I am in the process of building a new computer using an AMD FX-8350 along with an Asus Sabertooth r2 motherboard. Also will fill the memory slots with a total of 32GB of Gskill cas 9 ram. I figure that way I'll be able to run multiple VMs and anything else I want.

Even though I have been building computers for almost 40 years, I figure there is always more to learn and a place like this should be very good to increase my knowledge of getting the most out of my system. I began back in 1973 with Heathkit cpu trainers and then went on to building Motorola 6800 based cpu kits. Technology sure has changed over the years and look forward to increasing my skills.

Have you already bought that kit?

Welcome btw biggrin.gif

Yes, I have and expect to have it in about ten days. Looking forward to finishing the build then seeing just how much I can optimize the system.

I will have a 256GB SSD drive as the boot drive along with 8 other drives which I will make a raid 10.

Also two cd-rom rewriteable drives and a Radeon 5870HD video card so it should make for a nice general purpose system.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hmmm

Whilst raid10 is a nice setup, I feel you're not putting these drives to their best use.

I'd probably do a RAID1 for your system, then RAID5 on your data. You'll get more disk space with only a small overhead on write speeds which won't hinder your V-Environment.

I'd probably go with two 128gb SSD's and then mirror those for your system.

Interesting idea. I may have to wait until next month to buy a second SSD drive but your idea has a lot of merit.

Once I finish the build then I'll post the specs.

Thanks for your advice.

Well if you've not got the CPU yet either, you'd be better off with an i7 3770 as well tbh, even with the extra cores the HT on the i7 is much better for virtualisation.

Of course my idea has merit, I'm awesome, I live for this crap biggrin.gif, but if you want some more tips just make a new build thread with all your parts in it and pm me the link

Actually, I already have most of the parts. I went with AMD since I already had a Sabertooth r2 motherboard and am simply updating an existing system. I am only waiting for Noctua to send me a replacement part for the NH-D14 cooler. The ram kit has already shipped.

Your idea about configuring the disks is a good one which I will implement.

Thanks again.

Makes sense mate, there isn't anything wrong with it at all, I'm sure it'll keep up with whatever you throw at it biggrin.gif
