3way SLI

Thread Starter

Hey folks.

Just wondering if 3way SLI is a smart business? and also want to know which CPU and MOBO would be great for it.

I have a 670 and very happy with it and the way i see it until the 8xx or 9xx series, I might just add another 670 every 6 months or so.

Thanks in advance.

Also I am gaming at 1440p @ 60hz resolution. I might settle with Dual 670s but will add another one if a game really demands it.

At 1440p you'll be doing great with two. It would be best if you waited until the new series to come out to upgrade because the 6xx series prices will drop like a rock. If you want to go with three I fully support the idea. If it's worth doing it's worth overdoing. Cpu-wise? You'll be fine with an overclocked i5 or an i7. Mobo, just get something with a z7x chipset and support for three way SLI

So basically I should get a Z79 mobo and perhaps a 3930k?

Well the 2nd 670 might be a present for me, but I will get the 3rd one at the end of the year.

If you're using the 3570k in your rig, I believe it's enough for 2x670. Your board doesn't support 3-way SLI tho, and I believe that two 670's are enough for 1440p.

I am also thinking of switching to 3930k and a z79 motherboard.

I agree that 2 670s are enough for 1440p, I am thinking of grabbing a 3rd 670 at the end of the year or in 2014 because I believe it will be even more cheaper than now.

X79 + 3930K is the best setup for the money, IMO. I am somewhat biased, though wink.gif

I am actually doing the same thing, adding a 2nd and then a 3rd 670. I am going to be upgrading to a single 1440p monitor, and I want to be able to maketthe most of it. I have found that for me, at 1440p and if sitting more than about 20 inches away from the screen, anything over 4xAA offers no perceivable image qualitygain , but does have a significant performance impact. This will vary from person to person, but running 8xMSAA @ 1440p would be a bit of overkill I'dtthink wink.gif

I am actually going to be adding a dedicated PhysX card (and use it for Folding the rest of the time), so I am not 100% certain that I will get a 3rd 670, as I am looking at getting a new high end Areca PCI-E 3.0 x8 8i/16i-port RAID Card, which would make one of the extra GPU's not possible. I just don't know if I will do 3x 670s or 2x 670s + 1x 560Ti/650Ti...

I guess my point is that it's very good to consider what other possible add-in cards you will use, and go from there. For example, I also have a CreativeTitanium HD sound card, which takes up a PCI-E x1 slot and MAY block one of the x16 slots depending on the size of the waterblock on the GPU.

Fortunately, X79 offers literally more than twice the opportunities for cards that Z7x can do natively. Some people will say "but PLX!", and I would just like to say that even with a ultra-premium Z77 board like the GA-Z77X-UP7 or Maximus 5 Extreme, you are essentially dropping the bandwidth for each card to PCIe2.0 speeds, which could be an issue with the coming generations of cards...

I guess 3x670 will give you more performance than 2x670 + a dedicated card for Physx. Not very many games utilise physx and I believe 3x670 should handle anything even with physx set at the highest possible with pretty good FPS.

I think it all depends on what specific future games you will play. At the moment there aren't many games that are unplayable with your current setup. Even thought double 670 is a great choice, I think upgrading to another single card solution for the future is the best bet. This is because for example, if you wanted to play a much more graphic demanding game (say maybe Arma3), the bottleneck may become to be each of the gpu. I just think with the speed of innovation double or even triple 670s may be come inefficient and redundant when a game you have to play but can't, or new cards may blow it out of the water. Plus you never know what AMD can come back with.
