Whats the best motherboard for o/c?

Thread Starter
I am looking to upgrade my mbo/cpu later this year and need suggestions on a new motherboard.

Here's the cpu.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284

Price is not really an issue,I just would like to be o/c.

Thanks.

Any of the Gigabyte 990FXA (ud3, ud5, ud7)

Asrock Extreme 990

I won't recommend Asus because their quality department has fallen asleep over the years. I used them for years and then I had to keep RMA'ing boards until I got a working one.

The GA-990FXA-UD3 does pretty good. I would not recommend the ASRock 990FX Extreme4 or MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2. I've owned all three and found overclocking to suffer on the latter two.

Regardless of what some others may feel, if you're wanting good overclocking performance your options are probably going to be limited to a handful of Gigabyte and ASUS boards.

ASUS Crosshair V Formula
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

One I've not experienced or heard much about but might also work:
ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional

The Fatality X79 board I have was well built. If the 990FX version is similarly made, I can't see it being a problem. It has a 12+2 phase VRM which is promising. Phase count isn't the end-all of comparison criteria since "a phase" isn't an atomic unit that is always equal between designs, but on a premium board it's definitely a good sign.

To answer your question about the difference amongst the Gigabyte models, it mostly comes down to expansion slot arrangements. All three offer 8+2 phase VRMs. I can't speak to if they're all built identically.

I agree to the three models mentioned above. The 990fx fatality has issues, you might wanna check the Asrock 990fx Extreme 9 instead. thumb.gif
also a R3.0 model of the sabertooth is already out. Gives you the first PCI-E 3.0 AMD board as well. biggrin.gif

Can't find the new version of the sabertooth mobo on newegg.

The Asrock 990fx Extreme 9 doesn't support fx series pcu, at least it didn't say on Newegg it did.

Get a Gigabyte Mobo, you wont be sorry, had a G31/G41/UD3P and UD3R All Revisions, they are reliable as a Rock and OC like their is no tomorrow! smile.gif

Might also want to shoot for 5Ghz+ to make those cores work for you.
