What to upgrade?

Thread Starter
Built my first rig about 3 years ago and its time to add new hardware. Everything still runs fine but my GPU -ATI4890- is my main focus for gaming...I don't even play new titles because its not up to par. Here's what I have:

i7 920 stock @ 2.6ghz
6G DDR3 1300
4890 gpu
Foxconn BloodRage mobo
Corsair 850hx psu
Antec 1200 case
WD Raptor 300G
X2 1T HD
24" 1920x1080 monitor

Optimally, I would like to spend around $400 to upgrade my ram from 6G to 12G, and go from a 4890 GPU to either a 660, 7870, or 7950. I'm thinking this should suffice just for gaming again. However, if I really should upgrade my mobo and cpu as well I can probably swing it...they'll have to get replaced someday. If I do this, I'd like to try and keep the budget around $700.

My pc has been running almost 3 years straight with zero issues. I am wondering how much life my psu has left too. I know It's a good one, but everything has an end.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Personally, I would go for the 7950 and hold off on the new CPU and motherboard right now. At least wait for Haswell. If you are still worried about performance, just get an aftermarket cooler and overclock the hell out of that 930. It should undoubtedly be able to last a while still.

I think 6GB is still acceptable for gaming. Spend ~$100 on a cpu cooler to overclock that i7 and then ~$300 for a new GPU.

Yeah, I'm ashamed to say I originally was going to try and overclock the i7 920 with that mobo but never got around to it. I just got content with the performance and then didn't want to mess anything up since I've never OC'ed before. Guess now is a good time to learn.

Right now I'm eyeing the Gigabyte 7950 since i hear the new ones come at 1000mhz boost. And since I dont plan on OC'ing the gpu right away, I'm looking for the best bang for the buck @ $300 on newegg plus C3 and Bioshock included.

Anyone else think I'm fine right now only using 6G of DDR3 1300?

You will be fine with 6 gigs for now... And since this is gonna be a "gaming" rig you shouldn't need to worry much....
Good call on a GPU upgrade and holding onto your x58 for a little while longer, I am doing the same thing sans the GPU upgrade. I am going to wait a little bit longer for Haswell to see how that fairs compared to Ivy/Sandy Bridge. I am not really thinking of upgrading GPUs atm since my resolution is low enough for SLI GTX 470s to be overkill...

Good luck and most of all have fun!!!
