I can see many of you haven't bought retail in awhile tongue.gif. If the game is on steam, there's a pretty good chance you can't play it without steam these days, even if you buy a physical disk.

The real question is though, how is that steams fault?

Yeah it honestly isn't. I haven't seen any allegation that steam is pushing that to the devs; they just want to use it as a DRM.

Still, at this point the "don't like it, don't get it on steam" argument doesn't really work. It's more like "don't like it? Too bad, you can't play half the games".

This I did not know. The last retail game that I bought was Starcraft II. tongue.gif Well my argument is moot in regards to it being fully optional. BUT I still stand by it as it has caused no issues and has saved resources and allows for easy organization.

Valve wants to push steam everywhere and onto everyone. Soon, we'll have steam in our microwaves and bathrooms. They want to monopolize the industry. They don't give a about you guys... It's all about the money. Valve's marketing got everybody hypnotized...

Have you read about how Valve's management and employees work? There is nothing "money grubbing" about the way their business is run. You don't have to like them or where their products are headed, but it definitely isn't "about the money".

The main problem is that certain people look at Steam as a DRM and say "oh no steam is imposing on my freedom" not realizing that 90% of the the time if a game was not Steam Powered it would just utilize a different DRM. They think it's Steam that is causing all of this not taking the full picture into account. If a publisher wants to release their game DRM free they will. That's exactly what we saw with The Witcher 2. Those who wanted to get it on Steam could and those who didn't could get a completely DRM free copy. As a matter of fact they even give you the DRM free copy for free if you own the Steam version.

If everybody followed this same model we wouldn't have any issues. So next time you want to shake your fist at Valve for impeding your rights, why don't you take it up with the publishers instead?

Give me one example of steam marketing or advertisments.

Requiring a game to use steam as DRM is not necessarily their choice

People have loyalty to the company because they offer good service. Some people have bad experiences, this happens with every service or product. But one persons bad experience does not take away from that fact they are the best portal to PC gaming

EDIT: Half Life or Valve games do not count as "Steam Marketing"
