I'm pretty sure lots of companies have been sure about their products after BD (and I'm sure AMD knew it sucked) launched... Like intel with SB-E, AMD with the 7970 etc.. BD was also surrounded by rumors of bad performance and low price.

Not that this has anything to do with companies anyway, there's never an official statement on anything when it comes to performance.

Are you seriously going to tell me that when we know the specs of GK110, we know there wont be any radical architecture changes for the next gen and we know AMD's small die strategy that the assumption that was made isn't a safe one?

Um it should be fairly obvious to anyone with glasses and a basic understanding of GPU's.

Nvidia is placing a GK110 Chip with 2688 stream processors and 384-bit memory controller as well as 6GB of GDDR5 memory, and calling it a GTX Titan. IIRC it is the Tesla GPU just tweaked for mainstream. So knowing what we know about the Tesla, we can safely guess to its performance.

Not really a rumor considering we already know what GPU it is along with specs. Simple math will lead you to the conclusion that the Titan will have zero competitors this year.

The most conservative estimate for the GK110 is it clocking in at 732MHz and ROPs being the limit: that would give it 9% more performance than a GTX 680 or 30% more shading power, which in no way would make it impossible for AMD to beat.

The most likely estimate is that this Titan will clock in at around 850MHz and have 14 SMXes and 6 ROP/L2/memory partitions, that would put the performance in the ballpark of 35-40% better than the 680 which still isn't out of reach if AMD has decided to make a similarly big monster as GK110 is, even though I really doubt it.
The term is fan, or fanatic if you prefer the full word.

The proof of ROPs being the limit has been shady at best so far. And the proof of them being a hard limit that's the only thing to look at when it comes to kepler performance isn't there. And even if they are limiting they aren't the only factor, which makes the 9% number complete bogus that I wouldn't even call an estimate. Not to mention a 732mhz clock is very unlikely considering that that's also pretty much what GK104 teslas are clocked at.

And relying on AMD making a gigantic die shouldn't be part of the discussion when the topic is "safe assumptions about future GPUs"

Sick now give us dates on 700 series woot
post #56 of 1002
I doubt the desktop will see cards like this... maybe in a very limited run but not as a mainstream release.

I still don't know the usage of this up and coming GPU.
Is it going to be the "GPU to rule all other GPUs"?
A special case GPU with limited manufacturing?
A test case before 7xx series comes out?
If they are going to put out a GPU which will not be the next 7xx series, but be better, what is the point of the 7xx series?

I'm really confused here:thinking:

Not that I wouldn't like to see that monster coming out. But I'm not sure where it will fit.

I've been thinking the same thing.

I imagine that played a small part in why Nvidia delayed the 700 series until Q4. Might give them time to shrink their reference design, or work on lowering TDP or something.

Of course, maybe they don't care about the 700 series competing. Maybe the Titan will be the flagship card, and the rest will fall into place below it, for people that don't have $1k to blast on a single card.
