E6400 - DS3 or AB9Pro ?

Thread Starter
Hello. First post here.

I have ordered the following components:

CPU - E6400 C2D
RAM - 2GB DDR2 OCZ Value PC5400 667MHz
GFX - Geforce 7900GS

However, I am not sure which motherboard is best to get.
My entire choice is dependent on getting 3.1GHz overclocked. That's all I want =)

It seems the best two choices I have are:

Gigabyte GA-8I965P-DS3 SKT 775 P965 Chipset £96
OR
Abit AB9 Pro Intel 965 Skt 775 - £97

It would be great if you could give your opinion on which (if any) will get me to 3.1GHz on stock cooling. I have read an article at TomsHardware and he stated that he got to 3.1GHz on stock fan cooling using the AB9 Pro. However, I've seen a lot of praise for the DS3 around these forums.

If you could, please give me your opinion which motherboard is best for me to purchase given the components I've ordered and the speed I wish to get.

Thank you.

I have a ds3 965p got it to 3.3 stable. Hot! But stable, stock cooling. Northbrige gets hot as well. But I love it.

Ok, thanks. So it seems both motherboards can get to at least 3.1GHz.
AB9Pro doesn't have support for C2D Extreme.
So I will probably go with the DS3 unless someone changes my mind. =D

Yeah, the DS3 supports Kentsfield Quad-Core CPUs with a BIOS update. I'd say go with the DS3

I would say the ABIT board, just because not that many people have them, but they are very high quality. I think they even make the Fatal1ty boards, so you know they gotta be the best...

Grab the 965 S3-save yourself a few bucks as long as you dont plan on keeping that board for over 5-7 years.. (s3 is exactly the same as a Ds3 except the s3 doesn't have all of the solid caps..)

Actually Abit got their ass kicked for C2D boards, and they got beat out by Gigabyte.... I mean common, Get the DS3 it OC's better..

Look at www.overclockers.co.uk or www.scan.co.uk

They're certain to have the S3. Make sure you get the P965 chipset though, not 945..
