Buying Samsung low voltage ram and Oc'ing it is relativity popular.

Iv'e got 2400MHz RAM, G.Skill Trident X 2400MHz to be exact.... I got it because it was cheap! and to keep it if I ever wanted to buy a FX8320

It should allow a faster bootup time. It will also help the speed on opening applications you use the most as it's pre-loaded in the RAM ready for execution using "Superfetch"

If you have IVY it does make a difference. Its small but its there. The guy with 1866 RAM says anything over is a waste of money. Getting Platinums is a waste of money. My 2400 RAM costs $5-10 more then 1600 so why not do it.

From a quick google search, it seems anything past 2133 is not worth it for gaming as the latency increases with the speed thus giving negative performance in gaming atleast if you get 2400 over 2133.

So it seems gaming max = 2133.

If you look at the numbers for gaming, it might get you an improvement of 1% if you're lucky. If you're looking at cost-effectiveness, it's not worth the money to buy faster RAM.

Related (stupid) question, does higher ram speed allow for higher overclocks on ivy when upping multi only? Or am i simply going to max out my OC on either 1600 or 2400 ram?
I would say that 2000+ ram is worth it if you can find it cheap. For instance, I got 16GB of my Samsung greens for around $70, and I have it clocked at 2200MHz at 10/10/10/24/1T at 1.5v, which are pretty tight timings for SB-E. I'm sure this ram will clock a bit better once I get IB-E put in it because of the improved IMC. They rose the price on the Samsungs since then, but I still think they're a great deal at around $50 for 2x4GB (right around the price of competing 1600MHz sticks). The price:performane ratio is also much better than the factory 2400 kits that usually run you around $70 for 2x4GB.

Realistically, there isn't a reason to go with any RAM that exceeds the recommended memory controller speed, but it does't hurt to.

You almost make it seem like I suggested he go and buy platinums, this wasn't the case.. they can go buy whatever they like, much like I did, I would have brought Kingston myself if they were not so ugly.

To the OP Ivy bridge has a way better IMC than previous generations so everything is just better (aside from the heat when OC'ing) and ivy allows for higher overclocking of ram, if you want better performance get more ram as opposed to faster ram.

Well I'm not exactly interested in "overclocking" the RAM. If I were to get an Ivy Bridge like RIGHT NOW....I would just leave it at 100 BCLK and use XMP profile to run 2400mhz on the RAM I get....it's not like I would get a 2400mhz kit and push it to 2800mhz or something like that. Would leaving it at XMP profile be just fine?

I use to overclock old school Conroes and 775 platforms. Those had locked multipliers of 7x, 8x, or sometimes 9x. So all the OCing came from the BCLK and yeah it was beneficial to use high speed memory. That way, you can push the BCLK real high. Not sure about nowadays though

XMP profiles are overclocks, they have just been tested and certified by the manufactures to perform at these speeds above the standard ddr-3 spec
