I'm highly impressed with what can be achieved with mods (Skyrim, GTA). By default, games don't visually stand out though.

Things I would like see:
Less particles! This applies mostly to physx, which I can't use anyway, but whenever I see physx in a game its just lame particles which don't actually add anything. I've played around with the physx fluid demos when I was with Nvidea, why can't we get cool fluids in our games? Particles are usually superfluous imo.

Running Skyrim on the highest settings, modifying the ini to render ultra sharp shadows and render more exterior cells, using ultra high res texture replacers for every object including higher poly mesh replacements for all random objects and statics, and then capping it all off with a bad ass ENB setup is pretty breath taking. Seeing those rays of light come through the clouds themselves is superb.

Crysis 3 has surprised me quite a lot.

Besides that, nothing coming in the near future is leaving me the same way Crysis did back in 2008.

Game developers just wont push the limits due to the restraints of consoles. Next gen is always going to be impressive but current gen is still impressive, big leaps have only been made in certain games. Usually its just a little more detail here and there. I haven't experienced a set up like 3 monitors in 1600p and I'm sure that would amaze me, but once I have tried that, then what, where do I go, how can I feel that feeling of wonder and excitement of being genuinely impressed.

Totally agree with this right here! I like to revisit a lot of old games and kill my system with all the amount of AA it can possibly handle. I love playing Devil May Cry 4 at 2720x1530 with 8x super sampling and SMAA. I think for the most part, textures can get better. We have seen this already, where the PC gets special attention in that department and the results are good.

When I look at Far Cry 3 and while it looks great and has amazing effects, I hate seeing all the jaggies everywhere. Even using the highest amount of AA in that game don't rid it of ALL jaggies. To begin with this has been something that consoles have always lacked. That's why there's so many newer engines that don't even support proper AA. Since the consoles don't support it well... why bother implementing it.

That's the biggest thing I am looking forward to. Any game with no jaggies looks incredible.

Personally consoles held us back a lot, and I do mean A LOT. It infuriates me what we could be playing and enjoying had consoles not stifled the entire industry with devs not willing or able to push the envelope.

The sadest day in graphics-progression was when crytek-engine started being made for consoles.

I really hope that they focus a lot on the pc-market with Crysis 3, and from what Ive seen its really taking us forward leaps and bounds compared to crysis 2.


Other than that I also think that all we see now is console-ports with added 8x MSAA support so people with 680s wont cry themselves to sleep every night.
