Other than that I also think that all we see now is console-ports with added 8x MSAA support so people with 680s wont cry themselves to sleep every night.

Not even! It's becoming rare for games to support proper AA. As I stated above. At best, we get a L/M/H setting for FXAA... I cry my self to sleep with my 2x7970s frown.gif.

I'm still impressed by quite a few current gen games, and certainly how the best of the best on PC have looked (which seems likely to be close to the 'next gen' standard).

However, I'm more interested in art direction and unique visuals than all of these advancements in tech and raw power simply being applied to photorealism; the best looking games in my mind are 10-20 years old at this point. With that in mind, it isn't going to take much to really blow me away. Improved AA, better draw distances/LOD, etc.

I was reading an article on Oculus Rift , and John Carmack stated PC graphics have pretty much maxed out....meaning the amount of graphical detail we can get is getting smaller and smaller.

I think the next biggest revolution in PC gaming will be virtual reality. As of now the Oculus rift can only render in 720p...and we dont know what kind of framerates we'll be getting. Ideally rendering at 1080p, with 30 fps will be amazing , for VR.
It's all about total immersion, baby ! thumb.gif

I remember a couple of years ago a guy showed me a tech demo of an engine that destroyed a 980x and a professional grade gpu( don't know if it was AMD/Nvidia), built from scratch at a university somewhere outside of Toronto. Proprietary code that took 6 years to write from what I was told. And get this, it wasn't Direct3D. The biggest roadblock to the project is adaptation. The demo was breathe taking. It looked like current generation CGI, perhaps even better. It's been showcased at some of the largest conventions in NA and received some awards. The best way to experience this level of visualization would have to be on a single platform(think console) and the big players in the console space have their own suites.

So we will get there, it's just going to be a long time before we do.

With a previous PC FPS gaming background but now coming back to PC gaming after 7 years away only playing on an X360, my return to PC gaming in the past couple of months has been quite pleasant. I won't say that I'm blown away by the graphics but I do very much appreciate the fact that they are way better looking than anything I've seen on X360. With the advancements I can definitely notice that the level of realism is much more present now then it ever was 7 years ago which makes the experience that much more immersive. But I will have to say that I honestly expected PC graphics to have improved much more than what I see, especially considering the last big title I remember playing on PC was Doom 3.

Thats the issue atm, back in the GTX260 days game developers used to release games that made me want to go away and hide. When new games hit the market people were overclocking their hardware to be able to up their settings from med->high and nowadays we just up everything to max and get blown away if we dont throttle abouts 50-60 fps with mid-market GPUs.

Games like Metro 2033 are nice, they give us a run for our money. Thing is, most games that do that nowadays just run with 16x MSAA and poor optimization.

I mean come on, Farcry 3 even got some cred for being a good benchmark and whatnot, the truth is it looks like crap but at least it doesnt run on a 550 mobile.

Crysis 3 is around the corner tho. Yes its poorly optimized and yes both manufacturers have released about 50% improvements with just 1 driver update. But it looks friggin AWESOME.

I wouldn't say that it's poorly optimized...

Agreed, it's a new release and I think Crytek will certainly release more patches than they did with crysis 1.
