Looking for a cable/device for my needs

Thread Starter

I'm looking for something like this but not exactly...What i mean by that exactly:
i have one cable going out of my TP-Link router all the way to my parent's TV in the living room. The TV supplier has a device that has internet on it but you first have to connect it.So with the cable iin the living room,i do that. Now,i got a computer for them(basic stuff, core 2 duo,7950gt,2gigs of ram) so that they can use it for a home cinema BUT they don't have internet. They want to still have the access to the web from the tv but from the pc too.Basically,i'm looking for something like the one in the picture above but with one cable coming in it and from then on,i can connect two internet cables in it.So from one to two.Is that even possible? They don't need full speed, even half the speed for each device would be plenty.Thx in advance!
P.S. I know that's not the right place to post it,searched trought the forum where would be appropriate and i didn't find anything. Please excuse me!
P.S.2 Just found this: Click
Will this work for me? To connect one cable in it and then the so called switch to spread it over all the ports? I need 2-3

Well i live in a pretty big apartement and i'm on the last floor where the elevator thingy (pulling up/down rope) is and it's between concreve and a lot of heavy structure things....in short: Wi-Fi isn't able to go to there.
Tomorrow,to suprise my parents,i'll go and get this one from my local store: Click
What do you think? Is it any good? I use one myself for my room and my sisters room(my TV and PC and her TV) and it's working flawlessly.
What i have to do is just connect the one cable coming from the router in it and he'll spread the internet to the other ports,am i right?Damn can't wait to see their faces, got the parts for their build from my local second hand shop and i had the gpu already, using some cheap generic 320w psu that i had from an old rig too, they'll finally have the thing they wanted the most - home cinema. They were thinking of just buying one but i thought PC turned into one would be the better option.I'm still hiding the PC in my closet, tomorrow i'll get on working and hope to finish before they come home.Gave away all my money gathered for my future case, still don't regret it tongue.gif
I'll need to get around 10m internet cable too,are they expensive?

Looks good, Tp-Link is always very good, but maybe a Powerline Dual pack may let you get more or less same speed with no wires?

Yes it is just plug and play and if you need any problems setting up just post in here

Just out of curiosity....

Does the motherboard you used in their computer have 2 RJ-45 jacks? If so, you could connect the computer to the router, and the other device to the computer via internet connection sharing. You could probably use a PCI NIC to do the same thing if you have one laying around.

Nope,it doesn't have two RJ-45 jacks.I have PCI NIC but it's on my second PC and i use it daily because my native port on my mobo is broken.

Get the UTP cable. The FTP has a foil shield that won't do much for you unless you're doing full Gigabit file transfers. Also, if I understand correctly, this cable you're buying is only a short patch cable right? There is already an RJ45 cable run to the area where the TV is? If so then UTP Cat5e can handle full Gigabit just fine at 10m or less (super conservative, it should be fine at 20-25m).

As for the switch, I've never heard of tenda, but I've had very few problems with generic 10/100 switches (actually zero problems these days). Every no name I've bought has worked fine, and really 10/100 isn't asking very much out of the equipment these days. The only limitation I would think could come into pay is the MAC address table size, which is something I highly doubt you'd ever have a problem with on a home network any ways smile.gif. Id say you should be more than fine with any modern 10/100 switch you buy for what you want to do. The only thing I can think of is perhaps you might want gigabit at some point?

Actually looking at the specs I'd say you'll be more than fine with that switch. It's got 5 10/100 ports and a switching capacity of 1gbps. You should be able to max out all 5 ports in full duplex mode (which never happens). It has a MAC address table that is 2K(bytes) in size. A mac address is 16 bytes. That switch can keep track of 128 hosts (2048/16=128). I doubt you have more than 128 computers on your network smile.gif.

EDIT: Got it to work, downloading with 2,5mb/s right now.Amazing! Just ordered a laptop for them, second hand, this one: Lenovo 3000 N100 with a broken screen for 65 bucks. They're connecting it to a TV,so it's a no problem not having working screen. It would look way better because i'll just hide the laptop in the closet near the TV,it would looks way better. The other PC i built for them,i'll just contact it in their bedroom for office PC.Just need another 10m cable biggrin.gif ,quite expensive here ~7 dollars.I saw one for 0.36 pounds in amazon.co.uk biggrin.gif What do you think about the laptop? I already hooked it up and it's running flawlessly, the entirely death screen is the only problem, not a real problem for me though biggrin.gif
