Will this be good enough - Page 2

Don't go with those terrible tigerdirect combos. They're the parts no one wanted bundled together. Of course if you piece them out they cost more - the components were bad selections to begin with. Not least that PSU. Since it seems like you're not going to be overclocking (you don't want to be in charge of tech support for that anyway, right?), Intel would be your best bet.

In light of your budget concerns I'm going to recommend a dual-core with no hyperthreading. This scares some people, who shiver at the thought of saving on some components so you can meet a budget or afford a better video card. But it'll be fine for your purposes. You can upgrade the processor to an i3-3220 ($120 after promo code on newegg right now) and still hit a budget of $494. Alternatively, you could replace the video card with a more powerful HIS 7850 for another $50 (would increase the total of the following config to $489). But I leave options up here and not in the recommended list since you suggested that $500 would be a stretch already.

Intel Penitum g2020 ($65)

MSI B75ma-e33 ($53)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130654

2x4gb 1333mhz RAM ($34)
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=55544&vpn=996770&manufacture=Mushkin%20Enhanced

Sapphire Radeon 7770 ($120)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202011

Antec Neo Eco 400c ($40) - note this doesn't come with a power cord, so re-use an old one. Computer power cords are interchangeable. Also, this isn't some HEC PoS, so it won't blow up.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371029

Fractal Design Core 1000 ($40) - note this will only fit mATX motherboards, like the one recommended above.
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58341&vpn=FD%2DCA%2DCORE%2D1000%2DBL&manufacture=Fractal%20Design

Seagate 1TB HDD ($70)
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=65701&vpn=ST1000DM003&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1292

DVD-burner ($17) - though you could probably salvage your old one
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=49597&vpn=DRW%2D24B1ST%20Bulk&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1292

Total: $439
Not including: windows, peripherals (mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc), monitor. You can save some money if you can do without a DVD-burner or use old components (case, HDD).

I'd go with this one from Tiger Direct and pair it with a 7850 for another $200 and then for $500 he'd have a pretty sick z77 rig which he could upgrade to an i5 or i7 down the line if he wanted to thumb.gif

GIGABYTE GA-Z77-DS3H Intel 7 Series Motherboard and Intel Core i3-2120 3.30 GHz Dual Core Processor and Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 4GB DDR3

7850

This would actually be pretty good, except you wouldn't have a hard drive, so you'd have to pay more for that.

Ah, I didn't see that it didn't come with a HDD... In that case just downgrade the 7850 to something like a 7770 which is still quite capable and that would leave about $100 for a HDD or small SSD.

Well that wasn't even a full computer and one of the parts was discontinued.

Thanks, I hadn't even realized that the new Pentium series had even come out, but the problem is that this won't be an upgrade to a preexisting computer (unless you count his laptop, or from what I have heard, the craptop), so I would need everything that a computer would need
post #17 of 26
Uhh.. it's a full computer if you add a HDD.

lol

Add a 7770 to that rig and he'd be able to play just about any game out there, especially the ones you listed. Fallout could easily be maxed out on that system and he'd have the option to upgrade to an i5 or i7 down the road instead of being stuck with an Athlon or a Phenom II and a cruddy 760G chipset.

Which part was discontinued and how does that matter at all? Discontinued doesn't mean bad...

I don't know how you come to the conclusion that a less than $500 PC:

GIGABYTE GA-Z77-DS3H Intel 7 Series Motherboard
Intel Core i3-2120 3.30 GHz Dual Core Processor
Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 4GB DDR3 (x2=8GB)
Kingwin 650 PSU
Thermaltake Case
AMD Radeon HD 7770 ($100 addon)
1 TB HDD ($80 addon)

...is an any way a side-grade from a "craptop" as you call it. What is his current machine and if that PC above is not an upgrade then why isn't he just upgrading his good PC? If his PC is decent he should be able to upgrade it nicely for $500 instead of building new from scratch... I'm confused.

No, the craptop (his laptop) is what he has now, he says it is really slow and the fan is broken. The discontinued part was the motherboard so there was no use in that, and plus it was an open box, and i'm not going to trust those, same with the refurbished items.

Will this be any better? It comes with the HDD already and has an updated processor, do both the processor have the same L2 and L3 cache? I could find the L3 but not the L2

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7380568&CatId=5205 I just know I could put together an h61 build for that price that's better.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138332 motherboard $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153166 power supply $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353007 Case $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151256 DVD $17
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313097 RAM (1 stick) $24 (4gb)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116405 CPU $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211717 SSD $40
Have him use his lappy hdd for storage.

OR
This mobo http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=TA890GXB-HD-R&cat=MBB $63 MOBO
and this CPU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2372719&CatId=4433 CPU $75
The AMD in this case is much more powerful.4 true cores and can be overclocked like a bauss..that board can do it, too.
oh oh..GPU..$90 budget

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129146 GPU 1GB Gddr5 only 128-bit though..for like $40 more..the 256-bit cards are much better.

If he is only playing fallout, and is staying at that low of a budget, I'd grab a a10 5800k with some Samsung wonder ram. Overclock the bishh.
