3Mbps is 375KBps
8 bits to a Byte

So as Bitemarks has said, 3Mb/s == 0.375MB/s download rate theoretical, you might see variations on the connection.

Use www.speedtest.net to check what speeds your DSL line gives, iirc it should be somewhere around 6Mb/s if you get theoretical max

DSL2+ can go up to 24Mb/s on copper afaik

It's a different standard of connection

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_digital_subscriber_line#ADSL_standards

As far as I know ADSL2+ is the one I'm currently on, I get about 20Mb/s down and 1Mb/s up, which you can see is near the theoretical on the seconds to last entry on the table

DSL which is the first one only goes up to 8Mb/s, you have to know what plans are avaliable from your ISP in your country/locale if you want to upgrade.

As I said go to www.speedtest.net and post your results, that will tell you relatively what the maximum throughput of your line is currently. Steam alternates depending on which content server you are downloading from which you can check by going to Setting>Downloads.

If you can get optic fiber then doing so would be alot better than staying on any form of DSL since fiber goes up to 4x the max of adsl

Your speeds are certainly not near as fast as they could be redface.gif

What you might want to consider doing is checking whether your physical line is in proper condition. You would have to call a technician from somewhere to check it out, or somehow find out how you are connected since this usually affects your connection more than your ISP (for eg. see where the closest cabinet or exchange is from where you live, if it is too far away then no matter the plan you are on you probably wont see a speed increase since adsl drops over long distances)

Sorry I don't think telling you info on my plan would be much use since I live in New Zealand and not the US tongue.gif our providers and prices are different. It's called Orcon and it's about $140NZD (100ish USD) per month for internet with a data cap of 100GB and home phone rolleyes.gif

You'll need to talk to someone from your ISP or someone locally who knows/can explain how the net is wired where you live. If your home wiring or area does not support adsl2+ then you can't get it (I think)

EDIT: From the speedtest.net result you are on the AT&T DSL plan? Putting in a Spring Valley postal code I can only see DSL plans that go up to 6Mb/s which probably means ADSL2+ was never installed (read double edit)

Depending on how much more you want to pay each month I would think the uVerse Max plus plan (uVerse is the plans you were looking at right?) would be the best. Max Turbo for $10+/month for only 6Mb/s increase might not be worth it, and if you are going at 18Mb/s already (which is about 2.1~MB/s download anyway) then you don't really need it.

As for pricing I can't be sure since I don't know US pricing on internet (rofl the same speeds as me are 40USD cheaper than here thumb.gif ) but from what I can see you are changing from a DSL plan of $15-$20 per month to uVerse at $50 per month. If you have other ISP's availiable in your area then I would look at their plans and compare, all you have to do is find how fast in Mb/s download and divide by 8 to get your theoretical download speed in MegaBytes per second

Double Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_U-verse#Services

Looks like if you get uVerse then you get at least Fiber to the Node (FttN) connection which is essentially ADSL2+

In answer to your original question Yes upgrading to uVerse will be an upgrade especially if you go for the Max Plus plan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_U-verse#Internet

It's up to you whether you want to pay that much for it per month, though it includes IP Television and a home line? From where I am it seems worth it but you might want to get someone else in who knows your local ISP plans better than me smile.gif

If you home does not support fiber then it will have to use a ADSL2+ connection which may or may not degrade your speed, so you might want to still get a tech to check it. Also is the distance from the Node (cabinet) to your house, if it is too far away then you will get a loss of speed.

Well anyway it's definately an improvement on what you currently have.

ok ya... we are spending $38 a month for jack sozo.gif

and we can currently only go up to the lowest speed plan which is 3mbps. total bs. we asked them if we could get faster internet about 5-6 months ago and they said it would happen within a few months. so if i can i will see how early we can upgrade

i think we will actually save a bit of money though... minus the $100 installation for the gateway thing
