This will happen because most Windows 7 computers are good enough, and will remain good enough for the next 3 years at the very least. I see corporate not upgrading computers until 2020, when extended support ends. I also see most people with Windows 7 not upgrading until their computer breaks or feels too slow for what they do, which won't happen for 3-5 years for most people. Within 3 years, we should see the next iteration of Windows provided they continue the 3 year cycle. Or it may be possible that they implement Windows Blue sometime within this year or next year.

Its funny, the new start interface is actually BETTER than the old one. Also I agree about the printer drivers.. PRAISE JESUS someone at MS was listening to all my griping about printers and their driver problems! I actually should test out my 2 printers I have here. I typically hate installing printers. I'm going to play with it this week and see if it works correctly!

For most people that are not switching to w8 the start menu is not the only limiting factor, and in my regards the least of my worries when it comes to w8.

It's different, and it's "better" or "worse" depending on the person and their usage patterns.

Not to mention mouse and keyboard integration was mediocre at best. It's not seamless or fluid, switching between the two interfaces.

Does anyone know how to make the start screen (Metro UI) appear only on a secondary screen?

Ive got a small secondary monitor and it would be great if the Metro UI would only appear on that monitor when i press the windows key

I could think of a few things were the functionality is the same, but the presentation is totally different and thus matters.

If you can get by using just Linux, then by all means go for it. I wish I was able to run solely LM14, but gaming in a Linux environment is less than satisfactory.

When it comes down to it, I really don't care if you don't like Windows 8, but to sit here and tell people it is horrible to work with when you yourself do not know how to use it is just pathetic.

Except UIs are subjective, so while this could be a diamond farting jesus to you (To coin a term from Yahtzee) this may be crap to everyone else, currently it looks like a pretty even split.

Double face-palm...this further illustrates how irrelevant most of these negative comments on Windows 8 are. Most of these people haven't taken the time to learn the most basic functions. Don't get me wrong, there are things to talk poorly about when it comes to this new operating system(I am by no means a Microsoft fan-boy), but the topics most of you are bringing up come right down to good old ignorance.

The desktop view is great, except the lack of a start menu that's decent in it, with the Win7 start menu I can go straight into making a new profile with RadeonPro, or even start the games it offers, same with Steam and its different windows/options and my most recently played Steam games, you simply can't do stuff like that as quickly and as easily in Metro.

Also, it's a graphical user interface...I can use Windows without a mouse fairly happily yet I was still annoyed and slower on Windows 8 even after getting used to it. (It took me virtually no time at all to make the 98 > XP transition and then the XP > Vista/7 one)

I thought so too. Perhaps Calibre has optimization issues with Windows 8. Mind you, I saw similar lags with processing in large excel spreadsheets as well and I would assume Office 2010 would be fully compatible.

I was under the impression it was 2013 that was fully designed for it, but it would be odd for MS not to support their previous flagship product given that 2013 launched after 8..

Are gadgets actually used that rarely? The official statement from MS on why they removed them is that no many users used them. While I am gaming I am always taking peeks at my CPU and GPU usage and temps. The gadget options are just so handy. So I don't see PC gamers going in droves to Windows 8.

Not mention I have gadgets for network usage, drive activity, the weather, a couple news feeds, near real time market data, clocks for seven different time zones, plus some others I am sure I am forgetting...I have a 19" 720p monitor filled with gadgets.

I disabled mine from day one, since if I want GPU and CPU usage I also want temperatures and the like (And would just have Afterburner and Task Manager running), and everything else I just have on my phone.

What I'd prefer for temperature is the way it is in gnome, a little thing that you can put wherever you want on the taskbar.

This doesn't get emphasized enough. Windows 8 should be a 'must buy' for any gamer, especially if you have an AMD CPU.

That's funny, I have one of the Bulldozer CPUs that should get a decent improvement from Win8...There wasn't any real difference from 7.

Then again, the articles non-crappy (ie. synthetic) tests show a 2fps difference in Batman, zero FPS difference but a large latency difference in BF3 (That I didn't notice at all, in fact Win8 felt weirder because the mouse handled differently), a 2fps and relatively minor overall latency difference in a game I don't give a toss about and absolutely zero noticeable difference in Skyrim.

It's a funny old world, 5% extra performance on a CPU is noticeable and took AMD from not competing for anyone to just not competing for gamers. yet everyone assumes Haswell is going to be boring because it's merely reported to be 5% or so faster in IPC, but people act like the 1-2% difference you get between 7-8 is meaningful.

Microsoft aren't the only ones that can't accept that biggrin.gif

It won't be a failure, but it certainly won't be a success and if they keep their current direction going then they're certainly going to lose a lot of the business market fast (The better productivity thing is at best, subjective from user to user and at worst, completely false because I know I've heard a lot less people say they're faster overall on Win8 than people saying they're slower due to the new UI getting in the way of things) and probably split their main other markets.

For me personally the start menu is stupid. I don't miss it at all. However I doubt it will be too long before MS brings back the option for it. Too many people just can't deal without it I think...

This.. Also performance/compatibility issues and such too...

The first thing i changed on Win7 was the start menu with Classic Start Menu app...

Like I said, good but a lot needs to be able to be changed for desktop and the option to change it should be there. Microsoft deserves all the criticism they get for not including such a simple feature. Tablet it'd be great but my surround screens aren't a giant tablet. Will be getting a surface pro eventually and widows 8 will be great on it.

Just like previous versions of windows, you rightclick a music file and tell it to open with Windows Media Player by default if you want. Problem solved... coulda done it 10 times over in the time it took to troll with this post.
