Sorting Through HD 7970's

Thread Starter
Hello,

It's about time I upgrade my gpu and having searched through countless threads I've concluded an HD 7970 is in order. My confusion; however, is with all the variations of this card and hoping I can receive some insight as to what sets them apart (is it really just about cooling and OC abilities?)? These are the most common cards I've seen scattered across random comp forums:

Sapphire 7970 OC with Boost

MSI R7970 OC

MSI 7970 PE

MSI 7970 Lightning

HIS 7970 GE

If someone can please provide some insight into this mess I'd greatly appreciate it. I primarily game Skyrim with quite a bit of texture mods (my current gpu is struggling to keep up), but I do plan to use that Crysis 3 coupon and just don't want to be too limited at this point in time in terms of game choices (possibly BF3 included) smile.gif

My rig is as follows:

cpu: i7 920 D0 @ 4.0
mobo: EVGA E758-A1
memory: OCZ Platinum 6GB (1600)
psu: corsair 850hx
gpu: xfx hd 5870
cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems

Thank you for any help biggrin.gif

The Lightning is a nice card for sure but it's pricy...

Checkout the Gigabyte, it has one of the best cooling systems and it's on sale for $380 only (hurry-up if you're interested!), that makes $110 less than the MSI card.

Can you please explain why the dual link DVI is always mentioned as a pitfall of the Lightning card? Is it because you cannot game at a higher resolution than 1920x1200 without an adapter (as seen on reviews)?...just making sure I'm understanding correctly. I use a 40" 1080P at 1920x1080 if that means anything lol :|

the msi hd 7970 lightning does not have dual link dvi connector. so if you are using a 2560 x 1440 or higher resolution monitor with only dual link dvi and no displayport connector on the monitor you will need a active minidisplayport to dual link DVI adapter which costs 100 dollars.
