Use Cases for Aftermarket Cooling

Just a short question: In what situation do I need (not want, but NEED) to purchase and install an VGA cooler for my video card? For example, I want to overclock/get as much performance from my card as possible; what will indicate to me that only a better cooler will let me OC higher?

I highlighted the word need as opposed to simply wanting so as to exclude use cases like the placebo effect of seeing lower temps, having a quieter rig, looking more awesome than your friend's ugly stock, etc. I'm talking about utility here, first and foremost.

For my specific case, is it worth it to buy one (like, let's say, a Deep Cool v4000) for a: a) HD4770, b) HD7850, c) HD6870? would it be future-proofed against upgrading to newer cards, too?

No one can tell you if newer cards will fit a particular cooling solution because no one knows what the PCB will be like.

If you're running something like a 7770 then there is no need at all to get an aftermarket cooling solution. You want to consider aftermarket when you've spent $200 or more on a card since most of the better coolers are going to put you back $80 anyway (talking about the arctic cooling hybrid cooler thing)

Okay, let's talk OCing. Will an aftermarket VGA cooler allow me to get higher clocks on a card which I wouldn't have gotten on a stock cooler? Again, I'd like to refer to the 3 cards I mentioned above, but I'd love to hear people's experience with other VGAs.

Yes,

If you fit it correctly and it lowers your temps you will be able to get a higher overclock and remain stable since it won't be overheating. Why would people buy aftermarket cooling for their GPU's if it didn't benefit them in some way?

It will only help if the current cooling solution is what is hindering the overclock (and this varies from card to card so only you can answer).

I want to point out that things like the DCII and the twin frozr series are NOT stock cooling, those are already aftermarket coolers but they are put on at the factory.

@WR, what indication will there be for me to know that overheating is in fact the bottleneck?

@compuman, I noticed that, which was actually what got me curious in the first place about VGA cooling. I hear people complaining how factory-OCed cards aren't worth it and they could hit the same clocks "for free", but clearly a large portion of the price premium is in the better cooling, which in my book actually makes a factory-OCed card better valued. I was recently able to acquire an HD 6870 Toxic myself, and I'm pretty happy with the 970MHz stock and 1025MHz OC clocks I can hit. I'm thinking of getting some good thermal paste in the hopes of giving me even more wiggle room; I know of one review site of the exact same card could hit 1060.

The thing is, if you want to watercool the card then go with the cheaper cards and rip the heatsink off them, but you have things like the "Double-D" cooler which is pretty standard for most 79** series. Things like the Twin Frozr III are MSI' premium line.
