[EDGE] The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray discs and new Kinect

Quote:
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.

Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

*Rumour*

it's not a shock that it has to be online all the time.

it's not a shock they are blocking second hand games

and it's not a shock they'll be on blu-ray.

Having just built a new PC that is amazing at playing games, It's getting harder for me to see much attraction to the next generation of consoles.

Expensive games that have no resale value
Always online DRM
Low res versions of PC games (where available)

The only thing consoles have got going for them is the exclusives, but you have to wonder if they are really worth about £500 worth of outlay when there's a wealth of PC exclusives that wouldn't even get a look in on consoles but are brilliant games from less mainstream genres.

I also can't entertain the idea of playing FPS games with a control pad. Never could, never will.

I doubt it would dent sales considering xbox live is such an integral part of it..

i'm more concerned about the internet infrastructure

Ya fps on a control pad is pretty bad..

consoles have the quick, easy to go, casual gameplay beat by far.

Nothing else (besides leaving the house), compares to the simplicity of a console

Always online doesn't really bother me, I mean you need internet for Xbox Live.

If you cannot afford Xbox Live, get a PlayStation?

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Generally I never buy 2nd hand games anyway but it feels like another money grabbing stunt to shaft the consumer and frankly I am getting sick of it. If it is not the government it's the banks and now the large companies getting in on the act.

I think I will be spending the extra cash from not buying a console on some PC parts.
