sim ciy is speculaion on piracy , as it is not out yet DISCLAIMER

I'm not sure about the Sims, But WoW is quite pirate-able, considering there are alternative servers all over. I'm sure none of these swap account info with Blizzard, since Blizzard wants them shut down. I'm sure Diablo 3 has cracks, and who knows maybe even open servers too.

The reality is that DRM really doesn't work as intended. Every time a new DRM loaded game comes out, it has cracks loaded on pirating sites in hours. That's the way of things these days. Publishers and devlopers' best tools to combat it have nothing to do with DRM, such as competative pricing, cool extras, and games that are WORTH their price tag. Some have taken notice, others, have not.

I think D3 is sort of half online...so it is like WoW where there needs to be a server. If the server code was leaked we might start seeing private servers, but I bet that code is under tight "Glock" and key. If there are private servers they are kept very hush, hush so the population would be next to none.

However, making a good game isn't enough. Look at how much of a stink CD Project made about piracy on The Witcher 2...and most people believe that game game to be good at the worse. How much better of a game does it need to be before people won't pirate it much?

Always online is a deal-breaker for me. I just use my consoles when i'm not connected to the net, like when the connection is down or when I'm on vacation and don't have a internet connection. I Really hope these are just rumors and that the final xbox wont have that "feature". mad.gif
post #225 of 319
Its a simple fact that it comes down to greed. Once a game has been sold as new, the publisher/developer made their money off that sale, period. Beyond that, they are just mad because another consumer will purchase the same game later on once its been turned in as used for a lower price and they see none of the profit vs if the person bought it new.

My response? Too frearking bad. Welcome to a captialist economy.

Not any time soon...

Gamestop STILL sells NEW games, consoles. Not to mention they do preorders. Yes true Gamestop makes lots of sales on used games but 360/ps3/Wii isn't going anywhere just because "720/ps4/xxx)" is out..

If they want always on DRM and to kerb stomp the second hand market they're going to have to drop prices for games. No one wants to pay >$100 for a game that turns out to be utter crap and you cannot resell it.
This really makes me sad.

Just a small while ago, I decided that I will no longer play PC games that require Steam or Origin activation because I believed it was a huge waste of money to purchase a game for $90, play it once and then get bored of it. not being able to resell it.

I chose an XBOX 360, that way when I get bored of the games, I can make some money back from my old games to purchase new games.

I really hate how these companies can dictate how we play the video games, I mean, you do the right thing, you spend your hard earned money on these games just to be told, sorry, we are going to severely screw you over here.

Then these companies turn around and say, we want to stop piracy. They don't realize that their stupid decisions cause piracy to happen.

If this is true, and the new XBOX and new PS3 will lock the games to the console. Then I will not even be entertaining the idea of purchasing anything more from these companies.

I will go back to PC. Because even though the games are steam activated. I activate one game per steam account and then when I want to sell them, I just sell the game with the email account and steam account information so that the new player can log in and play.

I like resale value on stuff, if they are going to remove that feature, then they will gain no money from me...

Yes, the upcoming features from these consoles are nice, but they mean jack to me if they have no resale value....
