Don't mistake steam's offline mode with what's going on here. We're talking full time always on or never play.

Try shutting your system down a couple times and then see if you can play in offline mode on Steam without and internet connection. I bet you cannot. I'll defend Steam from now until the end of time as long as it remains a fantastic platform, but saying that the Steam service is not meant to be used as an always-on Internet service is preposterous.

My assertion is correct. I've had years of experience using Steam, and I know how it works.

Steam is a wonderous platform but everytime i've had to go "offline" i have to be connected first and switch it to that, Thesedays i just pull the plug and put my laptop in hibernate then go from A to B then game on power with steam still working as it just thinks the connections dropped.

Always online would absolutely suck, however I would be lying if I told you I ever used my Xbox 360 offline...

I just don't see it being a requirement though, because that would REQUIRE you to have Xbox Live to use your Xbox 360. UNLESS they make Xbox Live free, something I doubt will happen.

And that's completely fine. That's how it's supposed to be used. What Boinz is suggesting is that you connect to Steam, download all of your games, drop the internet connection, and then never connect to the Steam network again. That's a crazy line of thinking. Steam has a finite amount of offline log-ins with saved credentials before it will require an internet connection of some sort.

I'll shift my reasoning a little bit; I don't agree with what the console manufacturers are doing, but at the same time, I'm finding it hard to reason as to why they shouldn't. Everyone and their dog has always-on internet, so believing that requiring an internet connection to play your games will detract from console sales is a long shot at best. I just don't see that happening. Maybe I don't see this as a big deal because the majority of games I play are online, and I know for a fact that if I lose internet connect, all I have to do is tether my phone to my computer, and I'm back online (albeit with limited capacity).

This...

I don't mind the blocking of games, but as long as they make a OFFLINE mode like Steam and Origin has so when you want to take your Xbox somewhere you don't need any internet.

meh if they improve the Gold subscription and make it like PSN Plus, then i don't mind having the internet to be a requirement (since the current gold subscription does not had anything of value and worth it beside losing money from my/everyone's wallet). about the second hand games, that sucks you can't even ask a friend to borrow some games mad.gif

People actually think this will harm sales if this is true?

Are you kidding me?

Look at the Xbox Live most played list, almost ALL of the top 20 games of 2012 had a popular multiplayer scene. Then factor in the fact that CoD games sell about 10m+ copies on Xbox alone and almost all of those users buy the game to play online.........yea I can't see this hurting sales at all. The impact will be negligible if any at all.

Xbox Live is an incredibly strong service and platform and the Xbox has proven to be the most popular current-gen console for online gaming and nothing will change heading into the next generation of consoles

For those that say being online all th time is fine you are so wrong. PCs are always online or it has very limited specific usage. Consoles are never online to play. I play SP and with friends. I dont play MP.

Edit: This is done mostly for Piracy reasons at thats it. Xboxs gets pirated like no tomorrow. Only big tittles make it fine. It will hurt sales yes. What people dont understand is Piracy helps the platform in many indirect ways.

One of the reason Xbox did better then PS3 was because of piracy.
