I bought the wrong speed RAM will it make a huge difference?

I am working on a build for work, and purchased an 8GB kit of Gskill Ripjaw RAM. But as I was reviewing the invoice I realized I ordered the CL7 1066 kit instead of the cl9 1600 mhz kit. This computer will be used as an office computer but I want to make sure it will be as snappy and responsive as possible. Will I notice a significant difference from the 1600 mhz ram, or can I lower the timings below 7 or bump up the ram speed to compensate? The rest of my build is as follows:

CASE: Corsair Carbide 200R
MOBO: ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU: AMD 965 3.4ghz
PS: Corsair CX600
RAM: 4Gx2|GSKILL F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL R
Graphics: ASUS|ENGT430/DI/1GD3(LP) GT430

Yes, there will be a difference. If it were 1333, I'd say tighten the timings but 1066 is a no-no.

Man that was a really stupid mistake... I think I may have to send the RAM back.. the 1600 was only ONE DOLLAR more, I just overlooked the speed mad.gif

In an office environment its not likely to make a difference, using a SSD in place of a HDD would make the most significant difference in an office environment (with general computing, i.e. word, excel, internet explorer)

No big deal, set it to DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.60V and see if that can work.

I'm sure you can do some overclocking. thumb.gif

Anyone claiming that their memory speeds/timings are having an effect on perceived "snappiness" is experiencing a placebo effect. The real world difference in latency between 1066-7 and 1600-9 is about 8% but either is so "fast" that the 8% difference can not be perceived. The "difference" in the effective latency is equivalent to the time it takes light to travel about 18 inches. The only observer capable of noticing such a difference would also be capable of "observing" light-speed in near-field. Unfortunately, that particular super-human observer would be stuck waiting around an eternity for the next cycle of the screen redraw, so the improvement would go to waste as another bottleneck finds itself cutting would-be-nano-second performance down to millisecond levels. If you're like Blindrage606 and have time for breakfast between screen refresh cycles then you might want to exchange your memory wink.gif

Memory performance is the absolute LAST place to concern yourself with for improving the "snappiness" of a machine. As it would turn out, effective latency of memory has not improved significantly over the last 20 years. The reality is that it has never needed to. The screen refresh rate represents a far more significant bottleneck for screen draws that are not delayed by disk access. 120hz monitor anyone? heh

General snappiness will come from a combination of DISK performance and SOFTWARE CLEANLINESS. The only consideration for RAM is that you have ENOUGH of it to keep the system out of virtual memory. 2x4GB for office use will offer plenty of overhead for years to come provided the software side is kept clean. Fast RAM is not a replacement for responsible system maintenance.

There are cases where the higher bandwidth of the faster memory could shave measurable time off of certain memory-bound functions, however, those circumstances are few and far between in modern personal computing. For a typical "office" use machine, memory bandwidth is not going to matter. You could run it single channel (HALF bandwidth) with no significant consequence.
