My friend has been doing this for years now. Damn jelly of his grandfathered contract.

not sure how this would work, but sense it's plugged into the computer via usb won't it use the usb for power, therefore allowing you to take your battery out?

What type of issues? My phone is warm to the touch, but not alarming. I've been looking around to see if some phones handle this better than others. Problem is if I ever want to get a new phone I have to pay full price if I want to keep the unlimited.

When plugged into the computer sometimes the phone can't charge as fast as it draws power for the tether. I guess this can be combated by installing proper drivers that allow the computer to supply it with enough power. I've been using Bluetooth and keep the phone plugged into the wall for now.

Verizon was costing me somewhere in the ballpark of $270 for three lines (one grandfathered unlimited) the other two on capped plans, as well as the tethering addon. Sprint costs me currently $223, TWC Cable/TV is only $51 where I live. thumb.gif

I've never seen a smartphone that will run with no battery, it's used like a UPS to the phone.

One both the battery has swelled up a bit. The Tbolt I kept plugged in, but even still the battery life unplugged was just a few minutes. So verizon won't let you upgrade the phone if you're on unlimited? That's unfortunate...

The USB spec is defined as not allowing current draw of over 500mA while comms are taking place.

My Galaxy Nexus on Verizon will burn through its battery like nothing doing any kind of tethering that is downloading a decent amount of data. Also pretty sure I killed my old Droid X and a Droid X2 battery's doing this.

My Nexus has somehow ran off of wall plug in power when I pulled the battery once but haven't been able to do it twice.

my old xeon did, but idk about recent ones, i haven't tried it, was just a thought, but like he mentioned it probably would use more power than the usb could provide unless aftermarket (maybe) programs are installed.

Verizon will allow you to have an unlimited tethering plan for $30 on a 4g smartphone if you have the grandfathered unlimited data plan. It doesn't work on 3g phones and its 4g phones only - I exploit the hell out of this with my droid razr maxx and so far so good and it has been invaluable for a mobile connection. Keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't go away anytime soon.

I did the $30 tether option before, canceled it and now I use PdaNet, its free. Although, no Wi-Fi of course.
