They can (and will) try very hard to get you off the unlimited plan though. To the point of offering you devices and special deals and stuff.

I did this a few weekends back when my Charter internet was down. I used Wi-Fi tethering on my droid bionic with an unlimited plan through FoxFi. I then setup a laptop, connected the to the Wi-Fi broadcast, and bridged the Wi-Fi and LAN Adapters. After I had them bridged, I ran an ethernet cable from the laptop to my switch since FoxFi is also acting a DHCP server. I was gaming all weekend and it worked like a charm until the charter guy came Monday to fix my Charter internet.

EDIT: I tired USB tethering first and figured out that it would stutter in games a little bit and when I switched to Wi-FI, they didn't stutter. Also my phone did get a little hot, so I had to take off the battery cover and keep the phone plugged into the wall the entire weekend.

Remember advertised speeds are usually megabits per second, not Megabytes. 50 megabits is actually around 6-7 Megabytes.

+1! I actually have AT&T now I pay 55$ per month for Downstream speeds up to 24Mbps. on avarage I get around 12Mbps download and 3Mbps upload, which really isn't bad for the price.

I have Charter here and it's $40 with 30Mbps down, 4Mbps up. I used to have AT&T, I got 2Mbps down and .4Mbps up, that was brutal.

Lucky man!

"Sorry, Charter services are not available in that area" I'm a bit out the area. wheee.gif

Before I moved from europe in 2005 I remember a good connection was really, really expensive there, when I got here and my download rate was 1mbps, I nearly lost my mind. biggrin.gif I'm sure by now they have it all down there as well.

BTW I would hate to live in Australia biggrin.gif

Whoa! That would be awesome to have a 70/70 connection. What is your average latency?
