Maximum overclock for a Sapphire HD7950 Vapor-X - Page 5

Memory? Those are VRM temps, not memory?

Also most Vapor-X have Hynix memory, rated @ 1.5V.

I don't know if it is most because I have seen many people including me get the version that has the Elpida IC.

But yeah there is no sensors for memory temps so I belive Xerdon is mixing up the VRM temps with memory temps.

VRM temps at 100C will not klll anything on card but it's not the best temp to run at. Cooler is better of course but I have seen specification data on the BUSSMAN VRM that is found on reference HD7970 PCB and it is rated to run at around 125C max. So it can run up to 125C and operate but not really good IMO.

The VAPOR X uses some type of custom VRM that is supposed to be really good for over clocking. Not sure if it is better than the BUSSMAN but I don't think 100C is dangerous hot for VRM.

I believe Xerdon has got the problems with Vapor X identified incorrectly. I firmly believe the reason why these cards don't over clock well is because the BIOS isn't optimized for over clocking.

Ok I finally got around to booting up my 2 month old Vapor X HD7950 8+8 pin with Elpida memory.

This is temporary set up in my main RIG for testing. It barey fit.

My over clocking testing and experimenting with it is about to begin.

Good luck, hope to see some good results. Been heavily considering getting a 7950 Vapor X myself, but hesitant to pull the trigger due to such high VRM temps.

First test.

Furmark for 9 minutes with default clocks. First 4 minutes with default fan control and the fan was very quiet then cranked fan 100% and got loud but dropped temps about 10C. VRM temps looked good at the default clock speeds.

ASIC score sucks. 57% frown.gif My Sapphire 950mhz Edition HD7950 has 89% and can over clock to around 1370/1800 with water cooling.

I hate these low ASIC scores because they have such high default voltage. I hope the low ASIC score doesn't make this card a total turd.

Screen shots from my test.

My card sucks and I'm not happy with it. This GPU isn't worthy to be put on a HD79XX branded PCB.

Sapphire VApor X HD7950 Part Number 299-2E210-204SA

GPU-Z report info about my card's current BIOS
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ke552/

My Vapor X HD7950 has low ASIC score of 57%. 57% ASIC score to me is terrible. In school acceptable passing for average is 70%, 60% and below is definite fail.

VApor X HD7950 with poor ASIC score.
Default voltage under load is very high at 1.25v. For over clocking it the BIOS will only give me .05v extra voltage to go any faster and it doesn't get very fast. Definitely not a 1300mhz card... Maybe a different BIOS would allow for more voltage to go faster to be stable at 1300mhz or higher but from what I am seeing this card is not a high end performing card like it is marketed to be. VRMS don't get hot on this card and I think the BIOS is limiting the VRM power out put.

On the other hand my Sapphire 950mhz Ediiton with ASIC score of 89% will do 1300mhz with 1.22v stable and and the VRMs do get hotter but the BIOS on this card is geared for over clocking.

So how high can you OC it?
ASIC is calculated from the stock voltage, but the 1.25V is fixed on newest cards and may not indicate anything as to the silicon quality.

You could get a 99% or 50% asic chip, but with a fixed voltage, gpu-z would report ~60% for both.

The card has high default voltage because the GPU is terrible ASIC quality. Low ASIC score means it requires MOAR voltage to operate.

The card so far seems capable to run stable 1200/1250 with default voltage but I have to force voltage for stability. If I turn off force voltage and under clock voltage as low as 1.22v the card driver crashes.

I have requested new BIOS from Sapphire to see if it may fix performance. Only have 1 week to get and test and if no BIOS comes I'm getting a refund.

1200-1250MHz is pretty great. Having read recent threads, the DualX average at 1150MHz and often wont even reach 1200MHz.

With 1.3V or more, you can probably get 1300MHz+ so I don't see why you should worry about ASIC quality :-).

If you get a new BIOS, Sonda5, spread the love among us Vapor-X owners. Need new toys to play with devil-smiley-019.gif
