I need some help with licensing on windows xp

Thread Starter
I have an old emachines restore disk with the serial code which I used on the computer I'm currently on... first question is if windows xp acts like windows 7 now in that I can only have it activated on one computer at a time or not. I'm trying to fix a friends laptop by doing a full reinstall of xp so would I be able to use that disk along with the same serial number or would that cancel out my computer.

Also the disk is for Windows xp media center edition. He has a home edition serial number on the bottom of the laptop so would those be compatible. I'm looking for a legal solution... so if there's a way to download a windows xp iso that's not illegal I'll do it.

Unfortunately, it would.  The rule of thumb is, a Product Key can only be activated on one computer at a time.  To make it worse, your Product Key is an OEM Product Key, and that means that we are not supposed to be allowed to transfer it from one computer to another - even if the old computer is destroyed.

Yeah, they would be incompatible.  The legal solution is to purchase a new copy of Windows XP so that you get a new Product Key.

Hey again two cables... thing is though I got the restore disk from a computer at an old job. I have it installed on my PC and it's still running fine on the one at that job so that's my experience on that. I should also have another basic xp restore disk floating around somewhere so would that serial work with that if I can find it?

Hey.  :)

All I can say is, try it out and see what happens.  It sounds to me like maybe Microsoft doesn't really care about this for XP anymore.
