Windows 8 OA 3.0 issue. Actiavtion key in BIOS.

Thread Starter
I just came across my first windows 8 machine without a windows product key.
I was aware they were out there but it hadn't been an issue until now.

Essentially I have a brand new toshiba that shipped without any COA key on it. The key wasn't removed or lost, it never had one because the COA is linked to the BIOS through the OA3.0 thingy-whatever.
The weird part is this, If I try to boot off a non W8 disc it doesn't see any boot media. It doesn't see USB devices either, I can select to boot from ODD or HDD, either way I just get "no bootable media"
I have a disc with windows 8 developer on it from forever ago and it boots off that just fine. This leads me to believe that it would boot off the proper W8 DVD (that I do not have).

In order to install W7 on this machine I would have to flash the BIOS and then I lose the OA3.0 file????
Right???
Is there anyway to pull the OA file out of the BIOS? It is (in my understanding) the only location with a valid COA for this copy of windows 8.

I can probably get a W8 disc pretty quick but my customer would rather have windows 7.
Can I install windows 7 and ever be able to go back to windows 8?
How do I know what version of W8 this should have?

Sorry for all the questions, I just abhor working on W8 machines.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have option to disable Secure Boot in BIOS? If you have it disable it and everything will boot.

Well you sould be able to boot with Secure Boot disabled, the Windows 8 license will remain in BIOS. Whats the model of the laptop?

Figured it out.
switch boot mode to CSM instead of UEFI.

spoke too soon.
CSM mode will let me boot from other media (USB) but then it doesnt find an AO3.0 file and I dont get a COA code.
