System rebooting when BOINCing (SOLVED)

Thread Starter
Bought a new PSU listed in 1st sig rig because my PC kept rebooting spontaneously when crunching. Thought I was lacking in 12v rail in amperage. I still believe that was partly true and I feel comfortable enough that my new PSU meets the requirements. Problem is my pc started rebooting again when crunching. Frustrated. Temp was ok when I was monitoring sensors. I finally noticed while I was researching that all the sudden one of my cpu fans was dropping out to 0 RPM back to max and back to 0. I suspended the Boinc cpu app World Community Grid. no change. Disabled gpu only app DiRT and no change. Exited BOINC manager completely and the fan became steady again. Both H80 fans on my motherboard controller and never had any issue and actually performed a lot better. But note that I have two cpu fans on 2 separate controllers and only one is failing. I am confident now that the fan monitor is accurate as my core temps were definitely being effected. Could actually be the fan or the controller itself but I am Folding stable. Any ideas?

Update: FAH shuts down the same fan too. I plugged the H80 fans back into the wb controller and I can't tell if either fan is being affected. I OCCT'd my CPU, GPU and finally my PSU. No failures nor errors. Going to swap out my GTX 560Ti 448 with my HD4850 just as a temporary test to see if my GPU is effecting the pc ecosystem at all. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the fan controllers themselves are failing. Possible bad motherboard. Need to put them on a manual controller.

I changed to the H80 water block controller last night and can't be sure it is still failing or not. I don't know of anyway to monitor the fan speed from the H80 contoller but the pc still reboots. I don't hear a difference with fan speed on either controller.

its not the fan speed exactly, its the fact that the motherboard cant see the speed so to prevent overheating or failure it shuts you down.

Hey sorry to here about your problem, this is what i would try.

1. Pull all fan controllers out of the case.
2. Put all fans on to motherboard fan headers
3. Set the fan profiles in the bios

I would run this for a few days if the problem does not return, then you know you have a bad controller. It could very well be shorting out your system.

Now if the problem does happen to return, then i would swap out the fan. if that still dose not fix it i would brake down the hole PC and start checking everything. Also make sure the motherboard is not shorting out on the motherboard tray.

This is how i would start attacking this problem.

good luck

Thanks for the suggestions folks. Sorry I wasn't more clear but I originally put the H80 fans in two motherboard fan headers using the speed settings of the motherboard fan controllers through the bios. I now have both fan connections in the stock fan header in the H80 water block fan controllers. I found that on both my computers that have h80's that when I have the fans in the water block fan controllers that any monitor shows the same rpm no matter what speed I have them. This is on two computers and two H80's. So I am saying that I don't think I can trust the monitoring of the H80 fans. I am in the middle of transferring my gpu to my 2nd rig and an alternate gpu is going in the 1st rig having the issue. I am testing both now for stability I will let you know what I find..

Can't believe it. I was just giving this thread an update that the 2 rigs were running BOINC stable and neither cpu fans were dropping to 0 RPM anymore. Just as I was putting in my final comments about how confused I was, the 1st rig reboot again after 1 1/2 hours. I am starting to narrow it down though. I will conclude for now that it is not my GTX 560 ti 448 because it is still crunching on the old power supply. I don't believe it is the new psu that I installed a couple days ago cause I had the same problem when the old psu was installed on it. idk what happened to the fan monitoring 0 rpm on the occasion of starting BOINC. the fans are steady rpm now. That leaves me with CPU which BOINCS at 52* C core temps, motherboard and memory. I am concentrating my efforts on the memory now. I just down clocked them from 1866 to 1600 and loosened timings. Though I keep forgetting to reseat the memory so I will do that after I post this. How am I doing and what am I missing?

Reseated my memory along with lowering the speed, loosening the timings and lowering dram voltage. System is still rebooting within an hour of BOINCing. Going to try the memory I have stable in the 2nd sig rig tomorrow into my primary rig. I am really hoping to get this solved so I can get back to contributing to BOINCing and Folding but running out of ideas, The plan as I know it will be exchanging the memory tomorrow and perhaps I will tackle removing the motherboard from it's case and check everything for anything that might short out the board. My 2nd rig will continue crunching over night to be sure that it is BOINC stable with the GTX 560 Ti 448. I will still consider any other suggestions.

You really should set the PC to not automatically reboot on BSOD. The BSOD code could help narrow down your problem.

Try booting with a single stick, alternating between each dimm if it BSODs again. Could also make a bootable memtest86+ CD and test each dimm from there.

I will keep checking up on your thread... it's never fun diagnosing hardware problems mad.gif
