System rebooting when BOINCing (SOLVED) - Page 2

Thanks for the advice but I have already set the pc to bsod before restart and since then it only came up once. The only thing the pc does is black out, restart, post and come to the login screen. BSoD is already set up but the pc is not displaying it. Currently I have two copies of memtest86+. One is in the linux grub menu in which I dual boot and the other is a bootable cd. I have used both but mostly the cd. memtest86+ is at least 10 hours stable with both memory sticks. Later on today I will see about 1 stick at a time but before that I have a busy morning ahead of me. I will update my findings.

New development. I tested both memory modules individually. Both are successful on at least one pass each of memtest. By themselves though when I try to BOINC the system now locks up 20 minutes in instead of rebooting or BSoD like they did by themselves. The lock ups in my experience would be temp related. Though my sensors say my cpu cores are at 42*C the max for a full BOINC load. I had actually downed my cpu overclock down to 4.0GHz at those temps as apposed to the 4.4GHz at 52*C core max load I was at in the very beginning before this started happening.. I am going to do a couple things at once now. I will drop my cpu clock and voltages to stock clocks and replace my memory with a different package I have set aside. Other opinions and suggestions you all have are always appreciated. Especially your ideas on why both memory sticks together reboot the pc and the sticks individually cause lock ups under load. I got to be getting closer. I hate to say it but I am secretly hoping it is the memory causing the issue. That would be a more affordable solution as I just spent the money on my new PSU for this.

Let us know what happens when you put your CPU to stock clocks. Hopefully it's just an unstable OC.

Stock clocks and volts, 6 different sticks of memory set at 1333MHz with very loose timings (only one stick at a time of course), and only have hooked up the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and wireless adapter. Screen locks up 10 to 15 minutes into BOINC. So the problem in the beginning was rebooting by itself. Replaced PSU with a new one. Replaced the gpu with one that was working fine in another machine. Then, after singling out all the stick memory I have the system changed to freezes and lock ups when BOINCing. Again, I set all bios settings to stock. One more thing I never brought up was my storage drive is a RAID0 setup but I have already alternated those two with 1 larger one with no change. Please tell me it is not my vrm's or anything to do with the CPU or motherboard.

Update: frown.gif

OK . I put back in the original memory that is in my primary sig rig. I copied all files and folders fom my RAID0 x2 storage drives onto single hdd. started the pc with stock settings except memory which I under clocked to 1333MHz compared to the 1866MHz it is rated to be. I was stable for 45 minutes while running BOINC at full load and it rebooted at that time compared to 10 to 15 minutes and lock ups I have been having lately when trying other memory. I am at a loss. I can't figure out what more I can do in order to resolve this. Only thing I can think of is to find out how stable my pc is when it will pretty be much be idle for the evening. I will just turn it on and see how long it stays on but I don't think it will be effective at idle. BOINC and I believe FAH (though I haven't tried that in a while) is what causes it every time. Always open to suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Still stable after being idle for 10 hours. I am guessing if there is a short that chances are that the PC would have rebooted a few hours ago. Don't know what I need to try next.

Eureka! I found the solution at last. I have been looking at my hardware as being the issue and now it appears that it was software all along. I broke down and reinstalled Windows. I only took a couple steps at a time while testing for stability. I installed windows, winrar and prime95 and was prime stable for at least 2 hours. I added hardware drivers and was stable for at least another couple hours. And finally installed all windows updates and tested under the BOINC manager overnight and was stable for at least 10 straight hours. Still not sure what software was the cause but I only intend to install programs as I need them to see that none of them recreate my issue again. Next will be lifting my rig up with over clocks so that I can make a bigger difference in my crunching and folding. Thanks for all the advice. Case closed.

Keep on crunchin'! thumb.gif

I always like to do a fresh install of windows at least once every couple of months. It cleans everything up and it's easy and fast. Congrats on figuring out your problem. thumb.gif
