As far as the other issue that was brought up about "Donkey" and "Donkey's Wife", I would bet my GTX 580 that it was done that way to prove a point ... one about other teams who also have "similar arrangements" and are most likely just the same person using a real person as purely figurehead. Sure Donkey could have put the [T] behind the name to represent that he was subbing for someone, but I honestly think it was also to make a point.
So, having said that, how do we propose to prevent people from "stacking the teams" with 1 person who has a ton of hardware? Heck, given about 3 days, I could EASILY make my own team with the hardware I have now and with just 2 purchases (a GTX460 and an AMD CPU), I already have the rest up and folding now.
The notion that you have to just have an account here on OCN isn't much of a barrier. Heck, I can whip up 5 other email addresses and create 5 more OCN accounts in about 10 minutes. So I don't think that just having to have an OCN account is "enough".
Could we make it so that each Team Member have a non-similar IP address? Yeah, we could, but let's face it, that IP addresses are a dime a dozen. I personally have 5 different static addresses and 1 semi-static address, all different. And given the depth of my wallet, if I really wanted to, it would be nothing for me to just get 5 different VPN accounts, 1 for each of my "fake accounts".
Maybe require that each Team member, once a month, be in the TeamSpeak server with 1-2 Mods and the Mods could ask specific questions about Folding@Home and actually listen to the responses from each person? Maybe. You could easily better identify the voices and depending on how the questions were phrased, it might be pretty hard for someone who is just using their 8 year old kids name to Fold under to respond intelligently to FAH questions. But then again, what do you do if you can't get all 6 people in voice chat at one time due to a scheduling conflict? Etc, etc, etc.
There are a dozen possibilities to try to make this fair, and for just about every one I can think of can be countered if a person is willing enough and has enough money. So I don't know what to do really. Maybe we all just have to trust each other.
I like the "competition" aspect of this. The chance to win $10 a month doesn't even begin to pay for just the electricity, so the money aspect for me is meaningless. I have my reasons for Folding, some of you know, most of you don't. We ALL have our reasons. But I hope things don't devolve to the point that we all just make accusations at each other about every little thing.
For me, Team Competition is meaningless without the second half of our namesake ... Competition. If someone is "stacking the deck", they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. But then again, I also like the Team aspect of things, so I am also opposed to another thing that has been suggested in the back room discussions ... Once or twice a year, break up the teams and randomly assigning people to a team.
Not having a full team stinks to be sure, but it isn't really a Team, if you are assigned a person and can't have a certain level of control over the outcome of your teams. That is basically just a glorified Ladder, driven by pure luck.
Sorry for the seemingly randomness of this post.
